There is not a lot to do in Puno (its more of a base to Lake Titicaca). So if you find yourself some free time (as we did) the funery towers are a great option.
We went on a organised tour - they gave us a bit of information about the ruins but mostly let us explore ourselves. I'm not sure how else you would get there - its about a 45 minute drive from memory.
There are a lot of ruins in Peru but what makes this one quite special is the beautiful views and cylinder shaped funery tours that were so well made. Some were unfinished so you could see the process used in making them.
On the way back to Puno we stopped in at a traditional house and the owners allowed us to wonder around to see how they lived. I felt that it was a bit intrusive, some of the tourists were rude to the hosts and were given the children candy which can't be good for their teeth.
