“It feels like home ...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

My husband and I recently returned from our 5th trip to Panama (DEC31/11-JAN14/12). We booked our vacation through Sunwing Vacations and our original resort was the Royalton, however, very early into our vacation (2 days) we realized that the Royalton does not live up to it's name (or it's Sunwing * rating) so we requested to be moved to Playa Blanca Resort, where we have been before. (We've recently posted a review of the Royalton entitled "Our 5th Trip to Panama - the Royalton does not equal Luxury".)

We have NEVER been disappointed at Playa Blanca and this time was no different. Returning to Playa Blanca felt like we were coming home. Mariellas, the General Manager, and her staff go out of their way for their guests. Mariellas appears to be a "hands on" General Manager. Every day we would see her walking around the resort and talking to staff, talking to guests, checking on all areas of the resort ... that's what a good General Manager does.

This time we stayed at the Town Centre Suites (my only complaint would be that I found the bed hard. Please notice that I said "I" found the bed hard, you might like a hard mattress ... I'm used to a pillow-top at home) so we had the use of the salt water pool ... it was wonderful. There is still work to be done in this area (and being done in this area) but it's all good. The meals at Playa Blanca have good variety. The buffet restaurant uses linen napkins and have table cloths for lunch and dinner. There are two a la carte restaurants (suishi and chinese) which is a change because they used to have suishi, the grill and a mexican restaurant (we weren't sorry to see the mexican restaurant gone. They've turned the mexican restaurant into a sports bar). We didn't go for suishi this time but we did try the chinese restaurant and we weren't disappointed (the wonton soup is delicious). The wait staff in the buffet and the a la carte restaurants are friendly, eager to help and very good at their jobs. They have an egg grill at the buffet restaurant in the morning so you can order your eggs the way you like them. Daniel, at the egg grill, is great at remembering orders from one day to the next and he always provides service with a smile. They have on-site spa services which we used on more than one occasion and were not disappointed. The bartenders know how to do their jobs and do it well. Irazmo at the pool bar is a real character. He keeps a clean/neat bar and provides great service. Ask him to make you one of his "specials" ... he has several.

If you really look around the resort, you will see maintenance staff out working and improving things daily ... we see this as a good thing. They're out repairing steps, painting the buildings, the day before we left, they replaced all the lounge chairs throughout the resort. It's nice to see a resort constantly upgrading things rather than getting by on status quo.

One of the things we often hear from other tourists when we vacation in Panama is their frustration with the staff when it comes to English. Well, when you vacation in Panama you're in their country and they speak Spanish. They really do try hard to communicate and we've noticed huge improvements in this area over the last 5 years.

This trip we chose not to participate in the evening shows. We've done alot of travelling and seen most of the entertainment and after a full day out in the sun, we're just as happy to turn in early so it can start all over the next day.

For us, Playa Blanca knows what they are doing and they do it well.

“Great trip for young adults and parents”

Stayed here Jan 7-14/12 and had a great time. The first day we were disappointed that the pool closed early but we realized after that no one wants to swim after six anyway. Really enjoyed the buffett. We ate at the Chinese restaurant one night and then followed up at the buffett with a bit more food and dessert. Really nice that you have the choice to do this, if you please. My room was clean and nice, but son's was nicer. We think it may have been recently renovated. As we were departing, they put out new lounge chairs which instantly gave the pool a nicer look. Workers were painting the buildings when we were there and fixing the railings in the pool. So they are maintaining it. I think it was well worth the price we paid and would certainly return if the opportunity arises. We travelled from Montreal with Sunwing which was also a good experience. One thing I would like to see which would make a big impact on a visitors perception of the place is brand new, plush towels. The towels look like they've been there as long as the hotel has been opened. Make sure to bring your own suntan lotion and sunscreen because they charge 26.00 for a little bottle in the giftshop.

Room Tip: Stayed near lobby in building one. It was quiet and close if I needed anything from lobby.

“The only disappointing part of our Panama Tour”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

We just completed an 8 day Panama Tour with Caravan and the only disappointment was the 2 night stay at Playa Blanca. Although it has the amenities to be a first class resort, it is showing signs of age. The rooms although spacious, were not as clean as they should have been and the furniture showed signs of wear and needs to be upgraded. The bed was as hard as a rock and the bathroom tiles in the shower were moldy.
The open air dining room looked lovely, but the quality of the food and the presentation left something to be desired. I realize that we were in a Spanish speaking country, but the majority of the service help did not speak any English. The saving grace was the beach which was lovely and had a sufficient amount of chaises; although they were the kind with the hard plastic slats and most uncomfortable. I have been told that Caravan will no longer book into this resort.

“OK Resort, nothing special...”

OK resort, nothing special... music is really loud in the pool, the food was ok, the rooms were ok... for this price, I would much rather stay in a nice B&B.
you have to make reservations for the restaurants... we went to the sushi restaurant & after we ordered our first dish, we were told we could not order any more... that we were only allowed 1 dish. Of course, we complained enough until we got a second plate, and the waitress forgot to even ask us what we wanted so she just brought us the same dish again.
The beach is OK...

“La Playa Blanca, Panama - A blast for those who like a good time.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

Left Montreal on Saturday Jan. 7 - Jan 14th. The two hour drive to the hotel was beautiful and you basically drive across the provinces, seeing the panama canal, mountains, panama city for free. Panama it self has a lot of garbage around but no worse than in Jamaca, Mexico, Dominican, Cuba or San Andres. You are either rich or poor. The down side is any excursion you do takes 2 hours to get to. The resort itself La Playa Blanca is clean, not tooo large, beautiful beach and 2 nice pools ( one for activities and the other is a quiet pool). The one alert I will give you about the beach is that when the red flags are out be aware that at low tide there are jelly fish and sting rays burrowed under the sand and stepping on one is likely, It happened to my Husband. We used the Medical Clinic on the resort, payed $50. and the doctor took great care of him. The doctor gave us a receipt and later in the week looked at the foot again. The beach goes a long way, is clean and is very safe to walk up and down it. Make sure to take a walk down the beach towards the Decameron because there is a bar called Pipas that is good and a Canadian run bar called Woodies that has great food. You think you are isolated but you are not. The food was excellent and with only 2 a la cartes that makes a difference. 1 is Sushi and the other is oriental. I heard great reviews about the Sushi and we really enjoyed the oriental twice. The buffet area had a great variety of food all week, also they held two b.b.qs. The entertainment was great and Jamie Solis and his crew does a great job and is made even better by the people staying at the resort. The visitors need to participate to help make the show. The bar tenders were super. We went on 2 of the excursions, the eco canal where we went on the Gatun Lake saw wildlife, walked through the rain forest, had lunch and then was given the opportunity to kayak or fish in the lake. It cost us $88.00 each. Not a bad day, but you have to travel for 2 hours there and back. My husband went on the panama partial transit excursion and felt it was well worth seeing. They took a ride in the lock system and was given a lot of information, it also was 2 hours to get there and back. We horse back rode on the beach for $20 an hour and it gives you a great view of the beach front. The Catermeran was also great. The hotel just got brand new loungers in the day we left which would allow a lot of chairs for the beach. Rooms were clean, the safe was included, we had water on our floor in our bathroom every night and our fan did not work, but this was minor. Good Food, Family friendly, Good People, Beautiful Weather, Nice Place what more do you want!
