We stayed at the Royalton Jan 28- Feb 4, 2012. There was a 2 hour bus ride from the airport, which we were advised of prior to leaving and the itinerary also indicated this information quite clearly. Upon arrival the Sunwing rep suggested we use the restrooms and it was a relatively easy process to get organized. We were provided with a beverage and a snack on the bus. Our guide spoke english well enough to provide information about the hotel, our bus ride, and Panama City. The bus was air conditioned and quite comfortable.
Upon arrival at The Royalton, we were greeted with welcome drinks and advised that the buffet would remain open late for us. Check in went smoothly and we were helped to our room by golf cart. The room was clean and tidy. We did not have a balcony or a view but realistically I did not plan on staying in my room as I was in a beautiful country and the focus was to enjoy the pool, beach, and sun....for those concerned about the view maybe leave your room and go to the beach/pool. The shower didn't drain the best but it was certainly functional and there was adequate hot water. Our room was located in an area where there was ongoing construction which woke me in the mornings but again, I was grateful for the early wakeup so I could enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
The sushi bar was great! We didn't wait long for service or our food to arrive. The buffet was sufficient and did provide options. The italian a la carte was not my favourite but had good variety. In fact, a large group of us dined here one evening and the staff were quite accommodating. The pool bar was awesome. As a picky eater and vegetarian there were decent options and I cannot complain about the food.
The pool was beautiful! very clean and seemed to be the hub of activity. As we have gorgeous weather all the week most of our time was spent poolside. Service at the pool bar was great and while on the beach services came around to take drink orders, very nice. Although english is not the first language spoken in Panama the staff really tried and were very accommodating and helpful. Some members of our group had concerns about their rooms and were promptly moved (and in some cases upgraded)- they seemed to have no difficulties with this process.
As for the beach- not the nicest I've seen but hey, I was on a beach instead of in Canada with -20 temperatures and snow storms. There were horses on the beach although not all day- I did not see excrement. Stray dogs were around as well but usually left everyone alone and they did not seem aggressive. Reading the reviews prior to our departure were very frightening but please keep in mind it's a smaller resort that seems to be just starting out. Nightly entertainment was hit and miss but again, the entertainment staff seemed to be trying to make improvements. The premises was beautiful, the people friendly, the weather great, good food.... no complaints.
