“Good locations, smelly room.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 March 2011

We stayed four nights. The room was large and a bit dated, but would have been just fine if it hadn't been for that terrible smell. The air was so heavy that we had to keep the balcony door open at all times. Even the maid noticed it and tried to improve it with some sort of air freshener to no avail.

Breakfast was very good, with a nice selection. The staff was very attentive. We ate a terrible three course lunch and decided to refrain from eating dinner here. The location is excellent, but next time we are staying somwhere else.

“Exceptionally charming hotel. Fabulous breakfast.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 December 2010

Reflecting its 1905 origins (although recently renovated), this hotel is a delight, both visually and in comfort. Classic English heritage (the English were in this part of Namibia until 1994). Our very spacious room was on the second floor with French doors leading to a balcony overlooking the lovely gardens. Not a modern angle or decorative item in sight. Service was excellent, including free internet. Breakfast buffet was sensational, with exotic fruits, home made German breads, smoked fish and fresh oysters, plus any made to order breakfast with eggs, meat, etc. We were with a small tour, ,and the rooms we got were all very different. One couple was randomly assigned a small suite, which had a separate sleeping alcove and walk-in dressing room. Posted prices appeared high, ($200-$300 U.S.), but if you can find something within your budget on-line, this is a great place. Location was within walking distance of the shore, shopping, and city hall, where over the weekend there were many local wedding parties. Ate at The Tug for a sundowner (watching the sun set), and the food was very good. But discovered a restaurant called Zur Kupferfanne, which is about 2 blocks away and in a converted home. You can have a private dining room or eat in the main room. The whole house is covered with mementos from the area's history , including paintings and artifacts. It looks more like an overstocked museum. The food was excellent. Recommend you order from the children's menu (which is permitted), because those portions were very satisfactory, whereas standard portions were huge. Food was also excellent. Only problem we had was that one order arrived 20 minutes after all the others in our party of 6. Suggest you ask if something is going to take a particularly long time to prepare.

“Lovely hotel in a great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2010

Clean, comfortable, quiet rooms. Our room on the lower level featured separate sitting and sleeping areas, mini-bar, in-room safe, and a very large bathroom. Lower level rooms each have a patio with table & chairs facing a beautiful garden with many birds. Very good location, within walking distance of restaurants, shopping and sights. Beautiful lobby with antique furnishings. Generous breakfast buffet including fresh Walvis Bay oysters.

“A good quality hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2010

The hotel is centrally situated in Swakopmund in easy walking distance of shops and such sights and facilities there are. The public areas are pleasantly decorated; furnishing is rather dark and heavy. The room was spacious, well appointed and tastefully decorated. There was a flat screen TV and minibar. The food in the restaurant was good and portions generous; prices were reasonable; the staff waiting on were very attentive and friendly. There was a good spread at breakfast but the fruit ‘juices’ seemed to be nectars rather than proper juice (looking at what was available in Swakop’s supermarkets, though, this might be a question of what can be sourced in town). Staff were ever friendly and helpful, including with trying to resolve various issues that arose – the wi-fi was off for the duration of our visit, the room safe broke down twice, and we had to ask three times before the minibar was restocked. Note: the hotel’s rooms are on the first and second floors but there did not appear to be a lift. Off road parking is available for NS$20 a day. All in all, it was a pleasant place to stay.
