Landaa Giraavaru is probably the most beautiful place I've been to in my life, but there were a few problems with the resort.
With its crystal turquoise waters and white sands -- Blu beach is the stuff postcards are made of. One caution though -- the pictures make the sand look like the sand is composed of very fine talcum powder, but that is not the case for most of the beaches there. I think most of the islands in the Maldives were formed from old coral reefs so the sand has still retained some of the roughness from the coral. So it's a good idea to bring reef shoes if you want to walk around in the lagoon or on certain parts of the beach.
The seaplane transfer on the way there ran very smoothly. We didn't have to wait very long (probably around 20 minutes upon our arrival at the Four Seasons lounge at the air taxi terminal). Have your camera ready for this ride -- the aerial views of the various Maldivian atolls are amazing. On the way back, the flight was delayed a little due to weather conditions, but we didn't mind at all spending more time on the island. On our way back the seaplane did a drop off at the other Four Seasons -- located closer to Male. After seeing this, I was so glad that we stayed in a further more remote location. The various resorts closer to Male were literally right next to each other -- it seemed like one could swim or at least kayak from one resort to the next resort. I really liked how I felt like I was in the middle of nowhere at Landaa Giraavaru. The only islands we could see were uninhabited.
The staff at the Four Seasons were really friendly and engaging and overall the service was very good. I had some issues with my departing flight from Male on Emirates, and the staff there were very willing to help me sort it out. I'm pretty nitpicky and noticed that the tub was a little dirty upon arrival and pointed it out to the staff -- after that, housekeeping did a really good job in keeping our villa in tip top condition.
We did a snorkeling trip around a nearby island and I saw two sea turtles and a lot of tropical fish. We also did the dolphin cruise, and I have some amazing pictures of dolphins jumping out of sea! We kayaked from Blu beach to a sandbank about 1-2 kilometers away -- if you plan on doing this make sure you coordinate it with the weather, the first day we wanted to go, it was too windy. If you also plan on snorkeling in the house reef -- this may also be affected by weather conditions, when the wind picks up the visibility isn't very good.
I heard that the coral reef and marine life at the other Four Seasons was better, but the beach here is better and we still saw a good amount of marine life here. We saw lemon sharks outside of the bar near Cafe Landaa and also outside of our water villa, as well as eagle rays and sting rays.
The food was overall a disappointment, especially at Blu restaurant. For our first lunch, I ordered fish, which was quite horrible - I would have thought that being in the middle of the ocean, the seafood would be fresh, but this fish tasted like it had been frozen. The next day for lunch, I ordered a club sandwich (thinking that this would be a safe option, since it's hard to screw up a club sandwich) at Blu restaurant. If it weren't for the fact that I was starving, the sandwich was inedible. I wouldn't have eaten at Blu again, but we had booked the Romance package that included a dinner at Blu beach so had dinner there that night. I usually don't like to waste food, but I think I only had 2 bites of my main entree because it was that bad. But not all of the food was bad -- I think as a general rule, breakfast at Cafe Landaa and the Asian food seemed to be a safe bet. Also the burgers and fries were good. The food at the Moroccan restaurant was actually excellent. I wished that I had gone there the first night, instead of wasting our time with the other options.
