“No news - no shoes”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

We left the kiddies at home and escaped the freezing temperature in Europe to find ourselves sitting in a bathtub observing bats eating leaves on the trees surrounding our beach villa. Robinson Crusoe would have used the same materials to build this little treasure of a beach house: fully bio-degradable, but clean and luxurious. We have enjoyed the excellent food (local food in the middle of the island and in a two restaurants on the beach with European and Asian food), spent a day on a private island in the middle of nowhere and relaxed in the pricy, but romantic spa located in several wooden huts in the tropical forest of the island. We had a lot of fun with the bikes that are part of the Robinson Crusoe Villa survival kit and got lost in the jungle of the island looking for the spa, beaches, gym, open air cinema, restaurants and bars and watching rabbits, hens and many other animals wandering and flying around ( moscitos are not too big a problem as a romantic net hanging over your bed protects your sleep). As astonished first time snorklers we were enchanted to see dolphins, turtles and many colorful fishes. At the arrival we took off our shoes like all other guests and staff and forgot about the news. Total relaxation in a natural and unpretentious, but nevertheless very sophisticated environment full of friendly and helpful people that strive to make your holiday perfect. We will be back!

“You have to love this place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

Stayed in the Fushi Villa Suite after coming from Soneva Gili. Gili was much smaller and we stayed in an overwater bungalow so it was a nice change to move to a villa amongst the bush and beach. Great to have a few more people around and a few more things to do as well.

We hired a tandem bicycle and had good fun biking around the island and stopping at different snorkeling points or cycling to dinner on the other side of the island and cycling back.

You can almost get lost although we only really did because we were so relaxed and didn't concentrate. The herb garden restuarant was my favourite and elevated above the bushes with great views and superb food.

Again, a wonderfully chilled out place with no pretention and superb place. One of my best bars ever was near our villa with couches and net like hammocks over the water which was just sensational for a G&T after a days relaxing!

“A very special place, but...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

Many laudatory reviews have been written about this hotel so I'll try to be just objective while pointing out its positives and negatives.

Positives.

Maybe the main positive is the island concept itself which really creates a very special ambiance. Natural materials, jungle around you, bicycles to cross the island... Unforgettable experience for children as well as for adults.

Food. Excellent. Except for a very few letdowns, we rarely experienced such a quality, diversity and freshness."By the beach" restaurant and Bara-bara bar were our favorite. We were less impressed with the main restaurant à la carte menu (breakfast and buffets remained gorgeous) and service.

Service. Mainly, extraordinary. Everybody was helpful without being intrusive. Special thanks to Xain, our "Mr. Friday". Everything he organized for us - from special trips to in-villa dining was perfect.

Negatives.

One of them is often mentioned - it's the sunset side island opposite Soneva. We were on the sunrise side, but you still go admire the sunset or snorkel from the Bara-Bara bar - and the island is really close, much closer than we thought. Not a very pleasant view.

The snorkeling is far better on the sunset side. So if you want to snorkel directly from you villa (as we had wanted but were quickly disillusioned) you have to accept the opposite island view. The sunrise side snorkeling is close to non-existent except maybe for the Jungle Reserve area and farther.

Sandflies / Mosquito issue. These were really everywere and biting day and night. If you could more or less protect yourself from mosquitoes with adapted repellents, sandflies were invincible. We saw dozens of guests in a quite alarming state, which is understandable - nothing seamed able to calm their bites. That's maybe the only reason we'd be extremely reluctant to come back to Soneva, despite all our good memories of the place...

Room Tip: Sunset side for snorkeling, sunrise side for view.

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for your feedback. I am delighted that you found the time to write, the feedback will be of great help to us in resolving our shortcomings. I am nonetheless disappointed that your stay with us did not fully meet your expectations. Regarding the view of Eydhafushi, the capital of the Baa Atoll, Soneva Fushi is currently in the process of donating and planting palm trees across the entire front of the island which we hope in no less than a year, the view will be restored to a natural green look as Maldivian islands traditionally are know for.
Regarding the mosquito issues, Soneva Fushi is a dense jungle and the presence of mosquitoes is of concern to us. Only last week I have changed our pest management company who are making proactive strategic measurements in dealing with mosquitoes and already we have had great feedback from guests that the numbers have considerably been reduced and we expect in no less than a few months the population will be to a bare minimum.

Yours sincerely,
Laurie Burr
