“No way!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2010

i don't recommend this lodge to anyone who wants to have a happy vacation because vincent the owner try to hold me and my husband in all the tour we want to go..the room is just so so but the bathroom my oh my i even need my husband to hold all my clothes or else it will get wet..first day we plan to climb mountain but he insisted to take us to the kinabalu park and poring hot spring and we pay higher than the travel agency outside which my husband didn't like. He drive very very fast while drinking beer whole day!!!! and smoking or even answer phone calls its very dangerous..and it seems that if your with him you don't have a choice but to follow what he wants. He even yelling to the house care taker and once you want to book a tour with him he asked immediately for the payment. When were already in the mountain he even told us to tour fast because were running out of time wtf we pay for that trip and he wants to tour fast..when were heading our way he stop in a grocery store i thought he will buy a food but jeezz its another tiger beer!! im holding my husbands hand while he drives the car because its very very fast and me and my husband decides to go to the lodge for sleeping and the rest day we book our own trip to some jesselton point travel n tour! and the owner of te travel agency was the one to send us to our day trip and he even tour us in some places for free!!!and we just go to the lodge to sleep!!and we had fun in padas rafting mari mari cultural village island hopping and city tour without any help from vincent !!! he even said inter continental break fast but the only breakfast there was loaf bread and jam and coffee everyday..theres no juice water or soft drinks but a bunch of beers in can..

“Terrible place and owner”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 June 2010

The owner is a drunk and a junky, drinks and smokes the whole day long.
Trips are organised by the owner himself, starts drinking at noon while driving a car with tourists. He claimes to be the cheapest, by far not!
The other staff is very helpfull and friendly and deserves better.
Rooms are dirty and very basic, rates are to high.

This place is a realy not a place to be in KK.

“blown away by Vincent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 April 2010

What can I say about this place, apart from we meant to stay 1 night, and ended up staying the full week because of the lengths the manager, Vincent, went to help us enjoy what had to be a truly unique experience.

Not a hostel for the conservative, or OCD traveller, which added to the charm of our stay due to the more hardened and interesting characters it attracted to stay.

Vincent literally bent over backwards to organise our mt Kinabalu climb. He then proceeded to give us a very personalised experience of the local scenery, scuba diving and finished off the last night by cooking a BBQ on the beach after enjoying an amazing sun set. His knowledge and understanding of the plentiful nature surrounding KK never ceased to amaze me and my friend.

Cant recommend this place highly enough. The stop off to meet Jackie the urang-utan was a particular high point.

“Avoid, the owner just drank 24/7, was abusive to my 5ft 1" girlfriend and you virtually have to shower in front of him!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2009

(Firstly this review is entered very late as I only just opened my own tripadvisor account, I stayed here 1 year ago so its possible it has improved)

Stayed at this place as they offered the best rates for booking the Kota Kinabalu mountain trip, and so foolishly without reading any reviews just decided to book this place as our base in KK for when we returned.

To be fair with regards climbing mount kinabalu it all went off without a hitch and they lent us equiptment and sorted it all, so as a trip organiser I give these guys 5/5.

But as a hostel, the place centred around a tiny dirty lounge area in which the owner sat drinking all day long, on arrival he kindly offered us a free drink, I had a can of tiger, and put it down a few seconds later he picked it up and downed it! (I don't think deliberately, I just think he was a bit pissed)

The double room was literally the size of a double bed. And the shower room was directly off the lounge with no door and comprised of large water butts, there is no where to get changed or hang towels etc. so you have to walk through the lounge in your towel past him and his mates.

After the first night we decided to move elsewhere, my girlfriend let the owner know we had found somewhere else and he demanded to know where, when she told him he went into a shouting tirade saying it was ridiculous and that people checked out of there to come to him, he was very aggressive to her and he didn't re-surface the next day when I returned to check out.

The atmosphere was more like kipping at an unwelcoming friends house the day after a house party rather than being a paying guest at a hostel. Also as it was often just the owner on his own 'partying', it seemed less like a party, and more like one guy with an alcohol problem slowly drowning his sorrows.

I have to say that the guy's more mild mannered assistant who seemed to stay sober, was actually very nice and helpful, and I felt sorry for him as he was a nice bloke trying to do a good job, and he too was getting shouted at and bullied by the manager.

All in all the worse place I have ever stayed and I just wanted to write this review to save anyone else the experience we had.

But like I said before check these guys out if you want to organise a trip up the mountain as I can't fault them on that, just don't spend any more time at the hostel than necessary.

“Had the most amazing time ever in Tropicana Lodge, Sabah”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2009

Definitely the most helpful & friendliest guesthouse I've stayed so far. Even when they are busy, they serve pancakes, local coffee & tea for breakfast which is delicious but made the place a bit untidy. But they cleaned it up spotless clean as soon as we left. This place is special for trip arrangements traveling in Borneo. Vincent rocks. He made traveling so easy for us.
