“Bad Start - Average Ending”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

We arrived via AirAsia late afternoon - Xmas eve - totally famished so decided to go for the Xmas eve buffet - the food was typical buffet, nothing special...

When we asked for the bill, they refused to put it on our room tab (strange....) but given that we were very tired, we decided just to pay via credit card. The credit card machine did not work in the restaurant, so the waiter promptly walked off with my credit card, without asking permission... He was gone a good 10 minutes, and by that point, we were getting very annoyed, and suspicious.

He finally showed up again with the slip for me to sign, and when he gave me the card back, it was damaged - the top lamination had been stripped off when he swiped the card!!! He then disappeared when we questioned this with the head waitress.

The manager on duty came in on this case, and did not offer any solution to the fact that the card was taken away without permission, and that the card was damaged. His attitude was dismissive and did not seem particularly bothered by his staff's actions. Eventually after 20 minutes "discussion", and with our child getting very tired, he agreed to refund the dinner bill.

On the following day, we were in the lobby, about to go out, and requested the front desk to call for a taxi (they lurk behind the hotel) - the front desk told us to wait outside, and one would be called - we waited for a good 15 minutes, and then we went in to query the delay - the front desk said "oh, forgot".

Their website states that there is a convenience store in the hotel - NOPE - this is closed - the nearest is at one of the malls - at least 15 minutes walk, and a dice with death crossing the road.

The only redeeming factor was the breakfast - good quality, and they made a good packed breakfast for our early morning trip to the islands...

Room Tip: Ask for mountain view, or ask for directions to waterfront hotels...

“Meh...average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2011

Ok this place is now the Sabah oriental hotel, but don't tell your taxi driver that, the name change hasn't filtered down yet.
Well its cheapish, and perfectly a acceptable, not the best by any means nor the worst. The views are awesome if you're into gettos and filthy waterways, if not keep the curtains drawn. The convenience store downstairs is hmm, let's say limited in it's selections. Maybe throw in a very too.
My first impression was the smell, it stank frankly, of what I'm not sure, not even sure if they were supposed to smell like that, sort of a musty cigarette smell. Anyway reception got someone up to spray stuff around and that either masked the smell or eventually I got used to it.
Oh and the toilet needed a quick repair too but it got fixed no problem.
Truth is I stayed here because ihad to stay somewhere, having fled the Le Meridian that morning. And It was adequate and nothing more. I left the next day, I certainly wouldn't make this aa base to see Kota Kinabalu, although that should be a short trip anyway.

“Good option”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

We stayed for two nights either side of a four day tour and we enjoyed our stay! The location of the hotel is good - only a 15 minute walk to the waterfront. Rooms are good, comfortable beds, nice bathroom, friendly staff. There are terrapins in the lobby! We thought they were fake, but then they started to move.

“Average really”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2011

A Very average Hotel in need of refurbishment and caters for mainly muslims . Staff are averagely friendly and the food average as well.If you want a place to retire and shower etc then this will do , if you are looking for a holiday hotel then this is not the place.
2nd floor is smelly but thats life, if you need a taxi the hotel whislte one in and they run without meter for fixed price which is approx 3 times the price you would pay for if you walk a few meters to the main roads, did annoy me that as you dont expect this sort of treatment from the hotel you are staying in.
WIFI is free but limited log ins available , I had to go a a couple of times without as all the log ins had been used up.I tried for about an hour to log in at the lobby but gave up in the end.
Swimming pool hasnt been cleaned for ages and no towles available , the loungers looked broken and everyone can look at you from thier windows if you decide you are brave enough to use it.
Go ther if your intentions are to use it as a sleep/ shower place with comfort .
No one really knows what this hotel is actually called it WAS Beverly but apparantly changed its name to something , the "Beverly " sighn has been ripped down and just say Hotel, the in house stationary has sometimes Berverly on it , sometimes just tipexed out , if anyone finds out what it is actually called let me know as i am rather interessted.
