“Wonderful hotel in very center of Kota Kinabalu”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2011

The hotel has nice atmosphere dating back to 1950's. Situated in the very center of Kota Kinabalu everything is close enough. We had Superior Double Room which was really classy and nice. Because I dive, I had booked the hotel via Downbelow Padi center and we got discount and free breakfast. Superb! Which by the way was also superb!

The personnel was helpful and friendly. For instance when Malaysia Airlines caused us trouble by canceling our flight we could use the telephone at the reception instead our mobile phone (without local SIM card) and the expensive telephone in our room.

While coming back to hotel during night it was nice to notice the promotion sale fof wines in the bar!

“Food poisoning”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011

I ate a curry with prawns here and got terrible food poisoning that put me in bed for 3 days...

Considering that the cost of food here is 10 times the price of the cafes on the street I expected better... I would only eat in the small cafes in the street....

Room Tip: Eat ONLY in the places that are very busy, the ones that are empty and like that for a very serious...

“excellent value and service in a place with character!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2011

Really enjoyed our stay here. For the money it was an excellent stay and was hard to fault.
The staff are exceptionally helpful and polite (i managed to lock myself our of the safe twice but each time they came to fix it within seconds and were simply happy to help).
The rooms are larger and pleasant (for our usual 2 adults and 2 kids configuration) and well equipped. There is no pool but to be honest we didn't miss it at all.
The place has a lot of character, not least the barman who has served cocktails there for 40 years now!! The cocktails were a bit 1970's but it was fun and the pizzas we were served are some of the best I have ever eaten - and I have eaten a LOT of pizza (they kept tempting us to stay in and eat they were so good - instead of sampling local food). Particularly good value if you eat at happy our (1/2 price when they were cheap to start with).

I would happily stay at this place again, it is central to everything and can't really be faulted.

“Old World Charm”

If you want to enjoy the city of Kota Kinabalu you are probably best served by staying at The Jesselton Hotel in the heart of Gaya street. The classy interiors welcome you as does the colonial clad doorman and thereon the smiles never end . The rooms are comfortable and will accomodate a third bed if you book a triple and the internet and other comforts are available ...but thats when you realise you are in the heart of town and can walk just anywhere ...to the tourist office, Jesselton Point the night market the Handicraft market great food off the pavement and of course the Sunday Market where you can return to leave all your bags while doing the rounds over and over again. There is always something happening by way of live music and food festivals and while we were there my son learnt Vietnamese Spring Rolls from the Chef. Will be back just for his sake - he loved the hotel!!

Room Tip: Ask for a triple if you have a third person it isnt as bad a squeeze as some others!

“Good Hotel to stay in town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2011

We stayed just one night at the Jesselton Hotel, but is was very nice and comfortable. The bed was clean and not to soft or hard ...just right. The bathroom was clean as well, and I would alwas recommend the hotel for a short stay. Restaurants are close by, so you have in walking distance different food choices.
We were heading for the Jesselton point the next morning and this was very close as well.
So if you choose to go over to the islands infront of KK is a good Hotel to start from.
Breakfast was a little bit limited, but coffee shops are next door.
