“Basic, clean, friendly, helpful.”

The owner picked us up at the Kota Kinabalu airport, and took us on a quick little tour of the city before dropping us off at the hostel. Really interesting guy, great English, extremely nice. The hostel is tucked into a little side street not far from the main drag, so its within walking distance of the bars/attractions but secluded enough for a good night's sleep. The place is extremely clean and comfortable - not a speck of dust anywhere, and a nice common area for reading/hanging out/etc. The beds were fantastic - a lot better than my bed at home - and they were really flexible about changing rooms. We were supposed to move from a private room to a dorm on the second night, but when the couple didn't show up, we were allowed to stay in the private room (while still paying dorm room prices). The complimentary breakfast is basic but ample, and really appreciated for those of us on a tight budget. The staff also bring little jars of snacks and baked goods to leave on the table from time to time, and these are delicious. We could not have been happier with our experience at Masada and we'd highly recommend the place to anyone.

Room Tip: None of the rooms have windows, which is common in budget Malaysian hostels. So don't worry abou...

“Clean & Friendly Staff! Strategically Located.”

The hostel is located at about 10mins walking distance from Gaya Street (a market opens only every Sunday where you can shop for lotsa souvenirs & local stuff), banks and restaurants. Padang Merdeka Bus/Taxi Terminal is located less than a minute walking from the hostel where you can catch a taxi or bus to Kinabalu Park.

We took a taxi from the airport to Masada which cost us RM30.

The hostel is very clean, well organised and very safe. We stayed in a double bed room for RM80/night. Breakfast selection is minimal, only bread, coffee/tea, banana, and green bean paste cookies are provided. But overall it was definitely a pleasant stay and we enjoyed ourselves.

Masada had gave us a new impression about backpacker lodge. This lodge really well managed and it's clean, comfortable environment, friendly staff, safe and good in location, just like own home. My group miss it a lot even back from KK. Definitely recommend to stay when in KK!!

“I keep coming back, it's so homely!”

Masada has been my base 'home' since I've been in Borneo, as I have done day trips/ some days at a time to other areas. The beds and linen are as, if not more, comfortable than my own home and the staff are as friendly, relaxed and helpful, if not more, as my own family!

This is a great place to stay with hot showers, smiles, a fab coffee machine and relaxed environment to meet other travellers if you wish to. A must stay when in Kota Kinabalu.

“Homy and friendly atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011

Masada is one of the smallest hotels I stayed in Asia but the atmosphere is very vibrant and friendly. You get the chance to talk to different travellers in their tiny dining hall. The staff are very helpful and making sure that we will have great time in KK. Siti has helped me look for sites to visit around KK and she even woke me up for my river rafting at 5am because my phone's alarm clock was not functioning.

The hostel is safe since it is equipped with electronic door locks and surveillance cameras! They are able to maintain their hostel clean and orderly by imposing rules such as no slippers inside. Although I wasn't able to find my slippers for 2 days (someone used it!), good thing is I can use other slippers available there.

From a location perspective, Masada sits in the middle of the city. You can walk from the hostel to Jesselton point, night markets and malls.

This hostel is well managed and it's the staff and the people who stay here make this hostel a great place!
