“A decent hotel in a remote geography”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2010

I stayed at this hotel with my wife and small daughter for 3 nights. (1) December is monsoon season, the sea waves can be rough (and scary at times) when you could hear the sound of waves splashing on to the beach. (2) The hotel is modest, and I would say it has decent services considering that this part of Malaysia is not exactly a developed area where you could find trained hotel staff. They were polite, and they tried their best to entertain outsiders who come to visit their town. (3) Avoid the chalets / villas as they were not in new condition as the normal hotel rooms located in the main building. (4) You need a car as you would surely have to drive out to eat. Malay stalls / home restaurant are abundant nearby. (5) I chose Kuala Rompin and Summerset Hotel because I knew I would surely avoid office colleagues and my relatives during the holiday season. And I got what I wanted.

“the worst experience a holiday could be”

Where should i start? We were there for our honeymoon in june 2009. We went there because my husband was contacted months earlier by the summerset club to join the membership. As a result, we got 2 nights stay at summerset rompin as a complimentary gift being the new member.

The location.
-It was like really out of no where and very far away from the town. the beach was like the most unattended and very unattractive. almost nothing interesting to look at.

The check -in.
- We presented our vouchers, suddenly the receptionist gave us 'the look' and asked us to pay rm 120 for the surcharge. We were ok about it, but the staffs were such a snob, gave us the unfriendliest and almost rude service. we felt almost humiliated (look down on), like we dont deserve a good service just because we had the vouchers. We were at raged but still kept our composure.

The room.
We were given a room with a sofa, 2 single beds, worn down furniture. we were so frustrated about the 2 single beds. we felt like going to the staffs however, we canceled our 'trip' to the reception since the staffs were so rude to us. (i really hate the double standards-why do they treat the locals worst than the foreigners?). Dont want to let the room to ruin our entire honeymoon, we tried to accept the condition.

the food.
- we were only being given the breakfast. the buffet breakfast was fine. however, we had to drive for about 20-30 minutes to find a decent restaurant at rompin town. it was almost tiring to come back n forth with all the distance just to find a meal. the price for dinner and lunch at the hotel were overprice for us.

We were checking out the hotel with dissapointment. This was the worst holiday i have ever been. totally not worth our time and money. Wont recommend and wont go there again.

“new broom aims to sweep clean”

I do agree with the reviewer who said that the Summerset is in need of an update and I am happy to say that work has already begun. There is a new manager who has far reaching ideas and who is also ready to listen to what guests say they want from their stay.

The Summerset is an unusual complex of attractively styled buildings almost on the beach in a lovely peaceful setting and with a large swimming pool which, as Europeans in search of warmth, we wanted to enjoy. The two sun loungers were just not enough, we said, and several more were under construction as we left. Landscaping round this area was under commission and cleaning up the exterior of the buildings with power washers has already made a difference.

Our junior suite was the nicest room we stayed in during our 5-week holiday and we particularly enjoyed sitting on the balcony watching dolphins play close to the shore. There were some items we wanted added to the room and these arrived in minutes from staff who were unfailingly pleasant.

This is not a hotel for those seeking vibrant night life and its secluded location means there is nothing reachable without a car. Also, the bar in reception seemed to be closed during our stay although there was a price for beer on the mini bar list. If there is anything you would miss it would be better to take it with you.

We would certainly choose to return and would hope to find some of the planned changes in place. Top of our list would be some thorough cleaning and the creation of a beach side sitting area.

Dear Summerset Resort Guest,

Firstly, we thank you for choosing Summerset Resort to spend your holiday recently but regret that due to a few shortcomings, your stay could not be as memorable.

At this point, we acknowledge that we had a slew of problems in the past but glad that the problems are behind us now.

Some of the clear signs of this change include the spanking new spruced up building that welcomes you upon arrival. Other improvements at and around the resort include lush landscaping and upgraded beach area sittings. We will soon be introducing a Chinese restaurant around the beach area too for you to dine and view the sea at the same time. A recent announcement by the state government to invest a few millions to beautify our beach area is another plus point indicating there are better times ahead for Summerset.

Other attractions include the introduction of ‘Western-styled’ Ranch where we have 2 horses and 2 ponies for horse riding. New ‘wig-wams’ as seen in Western movies in the middle of horse-rink is a welcome break for family or friends to gather around. We will also be installing some inflatable for the kids to have a gala time.

For those who are looking for some night life, we have introduced a Filipino duo to entertain at the new disco and lobby lounge. For those who want to connect to the outside world, the resort offers Wi-Fi Internet service at the lobby area. Here too we have Arcade Game Machines to keep the children busy at times.

At this point, we would like to mention that improvements at the resort are being carried out in stages - in our effort to offer our valued guests an unforgettable and enriching experience. That being said, we would like to mention here that first and foremost, Summerset Resort’s primary goal is to stay as a serene and secluded resort for the benefit of our guests who would prefer the same. So, although improvements are being done, we want to ensure that they do not contradict the core concept of the resort.

Being a resort that is miles away from the big cities, the management had often found it difficult in retaining workers resulting in high turnover at the resort. The ‘lack of cleanliness’ as mentioned by our valued guest could be due to this reason. We assure that we are doing our best to bring Summerset Resort to the helm once again. We invite all guests to pay our resort a visit and see for themselves the new change at Summerset Resort.

“the other reviews are quite spot on”

We were quite disappointed with our stay in Feb 08. We have stayed in the hotel resort when it first opened and were then impressed as everything was sparkling new and fresh. Now years later it is run down and my guess it is costing quite a lot to retrofit and without the occupancy it needs to pay for these, it is money down a drain. The peat swamps and mini ponds were very pretty then but these days it looks rubbishy.

Food including breakfast is not to shout about but it is about a 20mins drive to Rompin for food. The sea looks muddy perhaps more so in the wet season. Overall if they spend more money to improve, there might be a chance i will return otherwise i am better off driving to Chearating for the value for money hotels there or the less pretencious home stay.

  • Liked — next to the sea
  • Disliked — very run down by now - retrofitting may be a hole in pocket if insufficient oocupancy

“Bargain hard”

To cut a long story short: when a developers pretentions are bigger than his competence, this is what you get: bad food, poor service, dirty rooms, landscaping that never has been tended and broken facilities. The place is vastly overpriced. I suggest you locate one of the budget accomodations if you must stay in the area or simply select another destination, say Kuantan.
