I stayed in this small inn for three nights for business and had to stay and work in my room pretty much all day. (Unfortunately I had a tons of things to do, so I did not have much time to enjoy sightseeing.) Knowing the rate (incl. breakfast and dinner) was on a kind of steep-side compared to the same type of other inns, I thought it was an necessary expense.
Well, the building itself looked nice-mostly new and well maintained-although each room is TINY (probably around 130 square feet or so including its own bathroom). Yes, one reason I chose this place is that each room has its own bathroom and toilet, which is kind of rare for this type of cheap hotel. Food was not bad but mostly tasted the same everyday (a bit differently cooked but with the same ingredients), so my multiple stay did not get an advantage at all. And a couple who runs this place was not really friendly (somehow there was always some sort of uncomfortable tension...probably they were not really used to communicating with guests well) but I think it was not a big deal.
Yet when my stay went onto the second day, the husband of the inn suddenly told me that he would charge me extra 5 bucks a day if I stay in my room all day. First I didn’t understand what I heard. I paid for three nights on the arrival (Yep, you have to pay the total ON arrival), then now he told me not to stay in my room between their check-out time (9 or 10am) and their check-in time (3pm) if I did not want to be charged extra fee. Uh….then what did I pay for? And what was worse, he did not include that “hidden” charge in the description of their inn on the online reservation site where I made mine. Yeah, yeah, of course it’s just 5 bucks a day, but for budget travelers like me, it really hurts (especially their rate was not really the best deal in the down.)
In the end, this issue went nasty. I contacted the reservation website asking them to negotiate with the owner of the inn. Of course what I could say is, 1) They did not mention that “hidden” fee in their initial reservation, 2) Customarily I have never heard anything like this kind of fee (I do understand that you have pay extra if you wish to check in early or check out late, but I was neither checking in or checking out—I was staying for multiple nights. (how ridiculous is that?). The reservation site contacted the husband, who got apparently upset at my move to have contacted the website, but it eventually (successfully) negotiated to cancel the “hidden” fee on the ground that it was NEVER stated when my initial reservation was made. But as you know, when you have some trouble with where you are staying, your entire stay as well as your checking out gets awfully uncomfortable, which was exactly what happened to me. The husband with smile-less face talked to me grudgingly that he would not charge me any extra fee….and then, that’s it! No apology, no smile, nothing. Then he said that he already added the “hidden fee” description on the reservation site so that none will book without knowing it (so he can comfortably collect money without mess...duh.)
So I would say,BE AWARE that there is an unreasonable, ridiculous hidden fee there. Although, I would stress that, generally speaking, it is very very rare to see such a strange “fee” for just staying in your own room during the day (which should be included in the nightly fee if you stay for multiple days). As you can imagine, what if you get sick during your stay, or if weather gets really worse and changes your plan…..Yep, you have to pay another fee to stay in your room! For that reason, I would NOT recommend this place to anyone at all except those who are really sure that they will go sighseeing everyday regardless (in other words, free from “just in case.”)
Personally, even if I am sure I will probably be OK, I would go for a different place.
