Stayed 2 nights during my visit to Hakodate. During my stay, Mrs. Saito informed me that Mr. Saito had passed away so she runs the place by herself now. The place is simple, basic, and clean. The bathroom and shower are communal. There are 3 separate rooms, each with bunk beds. I had a room to myself. Two other travelers each had a room to themselves. Mrs. Saito's English probably was not as good as Mr. Saito's but she was extremely kind. She lived in the same building and went about her daily activities so you feel like you're living with her. She gave great recommendations on local restaurants. She also allowed me to stay in my room later than check out time because my train didn't leave until late afternoon. It's a more authentic Japanese experience and the rate is a great value.
