We stayed here for one night on our return to Matsumoto. The hotel is western style and is currently going through a makeover. The lobby and public areas are fab. but our room was just ok.
Matsumoto is a great starting point for hiring a car to explore the country side. We used Nissan car hire (two blocks behind hotel). The GPS system is in Japanese but is easy to use as you just enter the telephone number of your destination. You very soon learn the Japanese for left and right!!! If you do hire a car try to make a stop in the Kiso Valley at "Kisoji Resort" (hotelkisoji-jp). It has a wonderful Onsen - another must do in Japan. The evening and breakfast buffets were fantastic with lots and lots of choice (Japanese and western) - it was a fabulous opportunity to taste lots of different foods.
In Matsumoto, we had a wonderful warm welcome in Mona Chulos, Spanish restaurant (beside hotel - behind the Espa dept. store) - great food and wonderfully hospitable hosts - cash only. We also eat at "Kura" (1-10-22 Chuo) - the food and service were excellent but it was a little quite the night we visited. The Old Rock bar had a great atmosphere and friendly staff.
Don't leave Matsumoto without visiting the castle. There were volunteer English speaking tour guides available when we visited. Tadashi Gido, and his colleague, made our visit a very memorable experience - thank you to them.
