My husband and I just returned from a trip from Tunisia. He's Tunisian, and we go every year at least once. This trip would be our 4th stay at the Caravanserail, which is about 5 minutes from his family's home.
This is really the only choice in Nefta, and it certainly isn't perfect, but it will do I suppose.
Details:
Lobby/public areas: probably the nicest thing about this hotel are these areas. The lobby is nice, ok not fancy, but nice. The bar/lounge area as well is attractive. It's a good place to wind the day down with a drink. I take issue, however, with the late night Kareoke. The hotel itself has a beautiful facade. And the public areas that lead to the rooms are really pretty with brick and clay, and some desert plants.
Rooms: Fairly large, very basic, and not terribly clean, but one can manage here. Just. The beds are low and hard, with old green (yuck) sheets. But they're clean. The rooms have old tv's, with little but Tunisian television shows. There is very basic furniture, but the rooms are pretty clean. It's the bathrooms where I really struggle at this hotel. There are tubs, and the shower is in the tub. The curtains are moldy, as are the tubs and the shower heads invariably are hard to manage. You basically will end up with a very sparse shower experience. The hotel provides bar soap, but nothing else. No hair dryer, so bring what you need. The air/heat is manual but does work.
Restaurant: This hotel offers very basic buffet service, along with wine and beer. The food is not terribly inspiring, but again, you can manage.
Pool: The pool area is quite nice. Earthy bricks, but plastic furniture. But it's a nice addition to the hotel.
Service: They try, and are nice about it.
Bottom line, this hotel mostly receives European visitors for a night or 2 on some kind of desert tour. For Nefta, the place is a palace, and your only real choice at this time. Id' suggest staying in Tozeur (15 minutes away by car), the Sofitel is the best hotel there, if you want to spend more money and be at a more world class hotel. But for the money, the Caravanserail isn't so bad.
