Just come back from an all inclusive stay at this hotel. We had no idea what Tunisia was going to be like and I wholeheartedly recommend it! The food is excellent and fresh, a lot of fresh fish (bass, bream etc, expensive in a UK restaurant), mixed meat kebabs cooked on the grill (meat was lean and good quality), nice Tunisian stews made with beans and pulses, plenty of Mediterranean inspired dishes with universal appeal (they do also have chips, pasta dishes, bread and ice cream and stuff for the less adventurous! Oh and fresh pizzas which we didn't try but heard were great). The restaurant is lovely, clean, bright and modern and all of the staff at the hotel are excellent (and never once did we feel they expected a tip, we gave each one 2-4 Dinars every couple of days when we had change) Presentation is beautiful, the salads are lovely, they often do elaborate decorative vegetable carvings and sugar sculptures etc just for fun! We tried the A La Carte Restaurant Italian menu which I didn't actually think was as good as the buffet but still good. They also left a birthday cake for my boyfriend in our room without us even telling them which was really sweet, they read it off our visas :-)
The hotel is on a beautiful clean beach and there wasn't a lot of rubbish on the surrounding areas (probably more in high season). If you are concerned about hygiene you needn't be, I ate salads, had ice in my drinks, everything is clean and well maintained. If you are worried about hassle it's really not that bad (hardly any in winter), like previous people have said just say 'no thank you' and smile politely whilst walking away and keep walking! Don't shake their hand or engage too much in conversation because you will be sucked in and then it gets a bit awkward. Just be firm, they don't really want to aggravate you it's just their selling tactics! There is a fixed price shop on road outside the hotel which is good for everyday things and a few souvenirs, the hotel shop is a little expensive but it's good if you really don't want to deal with haggling!
The indoor pool at the hotel is maintained at about 33-35C so nice and warm for when the weather is a bit off! The Moorish Cafe is fun and you can have a Sheesha/Chica and a turkish tea. The 24 hour bar is great and the young lad who works there became our favourite waiter as he makes you special cocktails according to taste!
Our room was really nice, clean and modern with air con/heating (sadly we did have to use the heating once or twice!), the bathroom was nice with a decent shower and a bath. Every room has a balcony/terrace, we stayed in the block near to the beach restaurant which I think is the newest so if you can try and request it, as we were on the ground floor we got a partial sea view through some gardens without paying extra!
The gardens are lovely and the hotel is very spread out (you can walk past the stables and see the well cared for horses that you can ride on the beach... sigh) so I imagine if you came in summer you really wouldn't need to leave ever! We went on a two day sahara tour organised by Thomas Cook which was great, highlights were riding camels in the sahara at sundown and being driven in a jeep over the sand dunes to see the star wars set! Oh and the Troglodyte houses (underground houses where the Berber tribe live dotted about the Atlas mountains) were really interested and the people are happy to welcome you. Having stayed in a 4 star hotel on that trip Les Orangers was miles nicer with so much more great food, but they don't have so much competition in the desert I guess!
All in all a great holiday for a bargain price! The weather was mostly sunny with cloud and occasionally raining and quite windy/chilly sometimes. I would say take a jumper or two whatever time of year but we did get a rather cold spell (snowing at home) so don't be put off!
Oh also, if you are a mega party animal this is probably not the hotel for you (Sentido Phenicia in Yasmine looked good for that or the Chich Khan), it's more of a quiet relaxing destination (although there is entertainment), a lot of the people were retired but we are in our twenties and there are plenty of other younger people there wanting to relax. Suitable for families/solo/friends I would say though :-)
