“Too many problems”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

Unlike many reviewers that stayed in the inexpensive Bamboo huts, we had two cottages together with a connecting door. So we didn't have to have mosquito netting nor a problem with other animals. The cottages were relatively clean and air conditioning as well as a refrigerator was provided. The location is good as on main beach on Koh Mook. There are several restaurants beside and behind the resort.

Overall, I found this resort poor in quality for what I paid. The island is ok but a bit rough, I do recommend a trip to the fishing village on the other side. There are some good restaurants around the resort.

Pros:
- People at desk were pleasant upon arrival
- The breakfast buffet is quite good with plenty to choose from
- the beach is nice and water ok although it can have some broken glass.
- you can sign out beach towels by the pool and use them everywhere
- there is a convenience store just behind the resort that has good prices on some basics

Cons:
- Showers were cold most of the time except around 4 pm. Why? no idea
- The paths connecting everything are trenches of soft sand that go right up to your bungalow. When it rains, not fun
- the toilets stink both in the room and out. The septic system seems to be right around the cottages. Toilets often clog and for no apparent reason.
- Staff is somewhat disorganized and can be rude, my son asked a question at the front desk and they made fun on him.
- Beds are terrible. After travelling for some weeks in Thailand, we expect hard beds but these were ridiculously bad. I had to fold up a towl to put my hip on when sleeping otherwise I would wake up in pain every hour
- Pool is pretty filthy, wouldn't let my kids swim in there.
- Charging for beach chairs? Come on, but a friend who stayed there for years tells me to say no as it is simply an enterprising staff member and not official policy.
- restaurant food is terrible and expensive, we ate lunch there once and never did again.
- only internet is thru three computers by desk and you pay by the minute.
- my wife tried to book a massage at the spa and that was so disorganized, she gave up.

I won't be staying here again and would recommend you stay elsewhere on the island or at nearby Koh Ngai island and either Coco Cottages or Fantasy Resort.

Room Tip: Pay more and stay in the actual cottages rather then the bamboo huts

“Nice cheap get away”

Couldnt ask for a better beach. The little cottages are nice, don't get caught up in having a beach front cottage as all of them are pretty close to beach. The staff was professional. The seafood dinners are AMAZING. Great breakfast buffet as well.
If you are into crazy parties this island isn't for you. This resort and island are for those who want a PEACEFUL getaway. For an urban guy such as myself I found the resort to be a little white washed as all the travelers were Danish or Sweedish. My only other complaint is that I could smell the sewage system from our bathroom....not good.
All things considered I would certainly go back. We booked transportation for this trip through the travel agent in the Bankok Train station. Thank god, because it can be a little tricky figuring this out on your own.

“RATS IN ROOM - avoid!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 May 2011

We were booked to stay for 2 nights, but after our fisrt night we left. the hut was beautiful, nice flowers on the floor bed and the view onto the sea was brilliant, set among the palms it seemed perfect. On our first and only night we were awoken by noises, scuttling around and squeaking in the room, we both thought naively that they were small cute jungle animals. we watched them in the dim night light scuttling around our bed and draging things. Through out the night they returned.
when we awoke we found 2 closed packets of biscuits we had, had opened and half chewed left behind the room bin. Because we were unsure as to what these creatures were we did not complain and left for the day to go sight seeing. Upon returning to our room at 5pm we saw that in fact the creatures were rats, we saw 3 and another one was trapped in the bamboo wall. We complained and the management went out of their way to be hostile and humiliating, it was awful, they even threatened to call the police. We asked to change rooms but they said ALL the bamboo huts had rats. It is THE worse place we have ever stayed in and hopefully the only horrible review i will write on trip advisor. If you want a relaxing and healthy holiday slepp - AVOID this dive.

“Location Location Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 March 2011

Fair enough this resort isnt perfect, but its very pleasant and it does have the best location on 'Farang' beach. I guess it all depends what you are after, but personally Im glad we stayed here. The other resorts are very close by but are a set back a bit into the bush area, so if you think insects/animals are bad here I would imagine they are worse at the other places! You are on a small Island at the end of the day, there are going to be animals and insects around!! Personally I didnt actually experience any incidents with rats/snakes etc, however we were staying in a deluxe aircon bungalow and I think these were definately the best option. Ok they were expensive at 2,300 baht a night but they were lovely, really big and clean with a nice bathroom and balcony etc. I would definately have begrudged paying 1,600 baht for one of the bamboo bungalows as they did look as basic as the kind of huts that you can normally get for about 400 baht on other Islands!

Its true that you dont need a pool when you have a beach like this, but it was a good addition as it was a lovely setting just next to the beach. Does get busy with kids but earlier in the morning we had the pool to ourselves.

The restaurant here was OK. Breakfast - you could find something to eat, but if it wasnt included in the price wouldnt have eaten there. Lunch - I thought was good. Dinner - OK but overly priced. Dont go for their set buffet style meals, it looked a right rip off, we just ate from the normal menu which was fine. As with the resort itself though, the restaurant doesn have the best location as its the only one right on the beach so its worth eating there just one night. The best food seemed to be at the place just behind Charlies so definately eat there at some point. There is also a nice bar just Charlies too with reasonably priced drinks.

I loved Koh Mook, its a really nice quiet place with a lovely beach to spend 2-3 days and its quite romantic for couples - my bf proposed there! If i was to visit again I would stay at Charlies again, and do what someone else has suggested - eat and book tours elsewhere. Oh and pay the extra for the deluxe bungalows, im very glad we did!

Unfortunately as its such a small Island places do seem to overcharge - especially Charlies. They are well aware that they have the best location and that there arent many other options on the Island. OK its a bit annoying, but think about what you would pay for food drink in any capital city in the world - then actually take in where you are and how nice it is, and stop moaning about it!!
