stayed for a very relaxing week at the flagship banyan tree. Service was faultless throughout and definitely worth a mention.
Liked the villa experience - absolute privacy, and a very good size. However, the property is showing its age. It is kept clean though, and housekeeping is excellent. Always remembered the extra water bottles or mosquito repellant. Not a fan of the toiletries though - they refill ceramic bottles with a wooden stopper for shampoo/conditioner etc, which get quite slippery in the shower.
Villa in Thailand means bugs and geckos galore - thankfully didn't see any inside our villa, but sitting in the open-air lobby bar or lounging area, you'll spot over 20 at any one time.
Restaurants on site are not bad, with my favourite being saffron. Morning breakfast was good, but gets crowded sometimes. Happy that they finish at 11 though, plus staff always goes around to make sure you've had enough. Room service also worth a try (and seconds and thirds!) Super fast (none of this "order before you get hungry because it'll take over an hour to come" nonsense) and truly 24 hours (for those odd cravings that hit at odd hours! 3:30am phad thai, anyone?)
We were there over the busy Christmas week, and there were supposedly power outages all over the island. Christmas night especially all the villas kept losing power, and the majority of the property was dark, except for the main building (and the cashier, as we were told).
The Laguna property that the resort is on has a few other hotels, with Angsana being the newly almost-complete one. We headed there a few nights, their lobby bar has live music, and the drinks are quite good. Also worth a mention is their buffet - costs slightly less than banyan tree's and I would say the selection is better!
Pleasant stay on a beautiful property, good for getting away from the hustle and bustle.
