I stayed at Expat from December 22-29, 2011. I can safely say that given the price range, it is one of the best hotels I have stayed at. Let me mention below the pros and cons of the hotel.
Pros:
1) Great great location. You can easily walk to the beach, not to mention the markets, the malls and all the various parlors. And it is not on the main road, but down the street at around 1 minutes walk. So this means that the hotel is at a very convenient location, minus the high noise levels of the main road!
2) There is a great big bar with a cool atmosphere and a nice English bar manager. There is Satellite TV there as well, with all kinds of sports including Rugby.
3) The hotel has a swimming pool with a beautiful poolside area, where you can relax.
4) The rooms are clean, with air-conditioning, a mini-bar and clean toilets with hot water.
5) The owner is an English guy by the name of Paul who is married to a lovely Thai woman, Gim. They are both extremely friendly. Also the reservations manager, Aung, is a really nice, hospitable fellow. All of these people make sure that any complaint one might have is immediately rectified.
Cons:
1) The food at the hotel restaurant, though reasonable, is nothing special. Perhaps, that’s not a major gripe because all kinds of restaurants, Thai, Indian-Pakistani, Italian etc are at a maximum 2-3 minutes walk away.
To conclude, I would say that Expat is definitely the place to go. I look forward to returning next year. Great comfort at the right price!
