“luxury at its best in a cr*p location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

My husband and I stayed at the Sofitel for ten nights in January. We had a garden view classic room, whcih was just lovely. The bed was roomy and comfortable, the nice little touches like slippers and robes in the room were a treat. The bathroom was clean, modern and functional and the maids kindly topped up all the toiletries daily.

The hotel lobby and grounds certainly have the wow factor. The lobby had cleverly encompassed thai architecture giving it a very ornate feel.

The pool at the hotel is humungous, it never felt crowded, infact most of the time you felt like it was your own personal pool. My only gripe with the pool area was that availability of shade was totally inadequate. Even if you were sat underneath an umbrella you still had the sun beaming down on you. The best areas for shade were on the grass verges under the palm trees. The only problem with that was that you had to drag your own bed from the poolside to the grass everyday and they were not exactly light beds. On the positive side the sun loungers were the luxurious kind and fresh towels were provided for the beds daily.

I think other reviewers have also mentioned that price of food and drink at the hotel were scandalous. We ate at the hotel twice, primarily because I was ill and didnt want to be too far away from the comfort of the hotel or my room, but once I was well enough we didnt eat at the hotel at all, The quality of the food at the hotel was no better than the restaurants in the near by town, ao nang, The only difference was that the hotels portions were much smaller than restaurant in the town and they charged you 5 times the price for the pleasure.

The positioning of the hotel is pretty poor. Basically in and around the hotel there is absolutely nothing worth mentioning other than a couple of restaurants and the very odd convinience store. Most nights we either took a private taxi or the hotel shuttle bus into ao nang, which was about a twenty minute trip. Here you'll find an abundance of shops and restuarants to choose from and the atmosphere is simply great. On five nights we ate an indian restaurant called Tandoori nights in ao nang. You simply have to try this place, the food is the best indian food I have ever tasted. We also gave a few of the italian restaurants a whirl but they really aren't worth a mention. Your probably wondering why we didnt bother with thai food considering we were in thailand, but to be honest we'd spent the first 7 nights of our holiday eating thai food in Phuket so by this point we'd had enough.

I feel I also need to point out that the transportation in krabi is not cheap, we were spending around £16 a day just to get to ao nang and back, but as I said there is nothing to do around the hotel so we felt we had no choice but to go into town.

The hotel offers a trip to hong island, which we took advantage of twice. The trip is not free as some reviewers have stated, you either have to pay for one of the hotels very expensive packages, which includes a light packed lunch and snorkelling gear or you can pay a small fee just for the national park entrance, I think this was around £4 each. Hong island is jusT breath taking. The limestone backdrop, clear sea and white sand was simply stunning. We got there for about 9am on both occassions and we virtually had the island to ourselves. It starts getting busy around 11am and then there really is just a sea of people along the beach .Beware as well, as beautiful as the sea is at Hong Island we did see quite a few jelly fish in the water.

The beach outside the Sofitel hotel is cr*p to put it bluntly. there is lots of rubbish on it and you definitely cant sunbathe or swim there. It's ok for a quick stroll but that's about it.

The real plus point at this hotel was the breakfast. The choice was extensive. You could have your eggs cooked anyway you liked, a good variety of breads, cakes, criossants, waffles, pancakes, fruits, cereal, cheeses, cold meats, the list goes on. They had every kind of jam and spread imaginable, in fact I defy anyone who says they couldnt find something they liked to eat at breakfast.

The other positve of this hotel was the free wifi in the business centre. Dont get me wrong you had to be there at the right time and be quite eagle eyed to get a free computer but it was still a nice touch. There are a fair few computer hoggers who use the business centre but if you tried your luck around 11pm or early morning you were usually ok.

Overall a lovely hotel in a rubbish location. Would only stay here again If i couldnt find a similar quality hotel closer to the main town.

there is nothing wrong with the hotel, other than it being ridiculously over priced. room is nicely sized, l'occitane cosmetics and all.. all great.. but rates are just ridiculous. and they do need a beach..as in proper.. the one that they claim they have is about 2mt wide sand and dirty..

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback on Trip Advisor.
We have taken good note of your comments concerning the price in our hotel. I am sure you will understand and appreciate the fact that we apply rates in line with other 5 star properties and also equivalent to the quality of service rendered.
We also regret to read about your disappointment regarding our beach. In Thailand, all beaches are public but we have managed to secure an area for the resort. We make sure that our Sports & Recreation team takes necessary measures on a daily basis to offer our guests a decent and comfortable beach.
We do appreciate your concerns and comments, and shall be looking forward to welcoming you again to Krabi very soon.

“Excellent babysitters”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012
8
people found this review helpful

We stayed for 10 days with 2 small kids

here a some good tips

1. The babysitters are really nice and kind. The kids club is well stocked with toys and a playground
Cost is 150 bat per hour. Quite cheap but adds up after a while.. In the end we just put one kid in and took the other one with us

Only complaint is the price of the kids lunch could be a bit cheaper (250 bhats with tax)

2. Actually the beach across the road is quite good for kids. Clean and not rocky, except at low tide...

Only complaint- needs the sun parasols there also, no shade except for the trees

3. The FREE long tail boat to hong island is excellent and with this you get value for money from the hotel. The advantage Over the private boat is it leaves earlier at 8.30 so you get to the island first boat! Bring your breakfast sandwich or fried rice from simantha

4. Good tip for walking into town , go out the main entrance , which is the back entrance, turn right, and walk down through the local village. Saves you walking along the busy road that everyone complains about. And it's nice and relaxing and very friendly locals. leaves you opposite the beach bar

Especially for people with kids, the hotel management should promote this safe way to walk into the village, seems we were the only ones who knew this

5. Best local restaurants for good cheap local food:

1. Restaurant with no name, Has white blank sign outside, big "welcome" sign inside on back wall . just past the pelican construction site on the left walking into the village. This is where all the locals from the hotel go" only opens for dinner, you will know its the right place if you see the Liverpool FC banner inside. Order seafood salad and red shrimp curry, local spicy level, excellent divine mouth watering delicious

2. Simantha - closest place and good, right by the gold course, eat on second floor, if you are hungry, order a 1.5 pad Thai as the standard one for 100 bhats was a bit small for me. A take away fried rice for 100 bhats here was the perfect thing for our 2 year old son, and us!

3. Best place for cocktails on the beach - Little Jamaica Bar - live reggae music , friendly staff, best stretch of beach in the area, has children's toys too so is good for cocktail with kids at sunset 5.30pm

4. Other option for lunch - mothers restaurant

Get your laundry done massage place near hotel, 49bhat per kilo

Overall the hotel is great, breakfast is brilliant, staff are super friendly,

should have free wifi

Also needs a better bar with happy hour, as realistically there is no evening atmosphere , so have to leave the hotel and go local

Local Places to avoid for food
1. Coconut - totally awful Thai food
2. Beach bar, English owner, good for western food only, hamburger is good!

We thought the area was too quiet till we went to Ao nang, which is an awful hell hole full of tourists, once we got back to our area we really appreciated how quiet and remote it is, while still having good local restaurants

“Lovely Hotel (location and beach could have been better though)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Just returned from a lovely holiday. Couldn't fault the hotel or staff. Spacious, clean rooms and a very nicely maintained large pool area.
The only downside was the hotel's location. The nearest restaurants were a 15- 20 minute walk away along a busy road which at night had no lights and no pathways. You could take a tuk tuk or taxi though for around £2 each way. (l recommend 'The Terrace' restaurant located opposite the Sheraton Hotel).
The hotel isn't located right on the beach either, you had to cross a busy road and the beach was rather dissapointing. You have a view of a large working metal pier and it is rather rocky to get into the water.
If you are happy to spend most your time at the hotel and pool area then you shouldn't be dissapointed as it was a lovely hotel. However if you like the beach and getting out and about like us then the location isn't great. I think the Sheration Hotel further up the road was positioned better and from what I hear has a nice beach front too.
All in all though a lovely holiday and a great hotel.

First of all, we would like to thank you for taking the time and effort to share your comments regarding your recent stay at the Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort. Rest assured that it is always a pleasure to receive constructive feedback, which allows us to achieve and improve our best quality service at all times.
We are sorry to hear about your disappointment on the location of the resort. We are approximately 15 minutes from Ao Nang which is the popular place for shopping or dining. In order to reach the place, note that we run shuttles to Ao Nang. We would like to assure you that most of our guest enjoys the tranquility of the resort, though it all depends on the purpose of the trip and holiday.
We do appreciate your concerns and comments, and despite all this, we do hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you again.

“Great hotel but just a little something missing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

Top reasons to stay at Sofitel
1. Great service - our baby stiller broke and the bell staff helped to send it out for fixing; we left things in restaurants and they held on to them for us
2. Private speed boat to hong island with picnic basket - really convenient as you get on the speed boat right across the street from the hotel; would be more 'luxurious' if they helped to carry all the towels and mats; koh hong is quite nice a la koh phi phi don
3. Largest swimming pool in Asia is quite impressive but not as luxurious as if there were lagoons or private areas or different types of pools.

Top reasons NOT to stay at Sofitel
1. Beach is really rocky and small ; also the beach is located across the street from the hotel
2. There really isn't much nearby the hotel. If you don't like being captive to a hotel this is a problem

Irritations
1. Everything costs just a little more than at comparable hotels. It's understandable that it would be higher than Thailand in general, but really 10-20% more for Coke (Pepsi At Sofitel ) or water than the Sheraton ?
2. Only bottled watered is offered at restaurants.
