There are three aspects to VN Guesthouse, the rooms, the food, and the staff. We stayed at VN Guesthouse in mid-january. We originally booked for 2 nights but ended up staying 5 because we did an overnight tour in between. We had tried to book at floating cabin room but these fill up fast in the high season so we had to settle for a room in the concrete guesthouse. The room itself leaves a bit to be desired. They are basic but functional, our room opened to a small foyer which fit a chair, a small tablely-type thing to put stuff like toiletries or a purse on, and a small beat-up armoire. Off the foyer is the bathroom, which is completely functional for what you need to do. The bucket flush toilet didn't bother us... Behind the foyer and bathroom is an alcove which has exactly enough space for two packs and two twin beds. The fan above the bed was sufficient at keeping us cool and blocking some of the night noises mostly caused by other guests chatting outside their various rooms. For the price, we paid 250 baht (under $5) with a fan and cold water shower (its damn hot in Kanchanaburi but an extra 30 baht ($1) gets the hot water turned on), and excellent in-room wi-fi reception... Its a very good value, so far the best I have had in y 3 weeks in Thailand. We didn't spend a lot of time in the room anyway so it wasn't a big deal. We had room #4 which looked partially over the river and partially at the floating guesthouse. I think Rooms 1-4 are the best because they are right on the river and have pretty much unobstructed views. There is a table and two chairs outside front of the room which is great to sit and watch life go by, chat with other guests, or plan the rest of your trip from. We spent most of our time upstairs at the restaurant/lounge area, which brings me to part 2.
The food at VN Guesthouse is some of the best I have had in Thailand. We only ate thai and burmese items so I can't comment on the Western fare. The flavour was incredible and the ingredients were very fresh and plentiful. My only criticism was that the consistency wasn't there. We had a couple of meals where I suspect either someone else was cooking or they ran out of certain things but again, even the lesser quality meals were better than anything else we ate in Kanchanaburi. The prices were very reasonable at 45-70 baht and an extra 15 for rice (with some dishes) (this always annoys me since its an inexpensive staple item but a lot of restaurants seem to do it). The restaurant itself is a great place to chill and enjoy a beer or fruit lassie (milkshake if you prefer milk over yogourt). Its definitely the social gathering place. There are tables with chairs in the front and low tables with cushions in the back which over looks the river. The sunsets are a nice bonus.
The staff are very friendly and helpful. The lady that runs the place is awesome and really helpful though she's also really busy running the place. We booked a tour through VN Guesthouse and Good Times Travel. I'll comment on the tour separately but VN made booking it really really easy.
The only thing negative comment I have has to be the noise level in the rooms at night. If the socializing was contained to the bar/restaurant area it would be fine as noise carries up, but quite a few people tended to gather at the tables in front of the rooms and drink and talk or come home from bars and chat outside for quite a while. Since the windows only have screens and some glass slats, conversations tend to sound like their beside your bed. As I said the fan helped but not much.
All in all VN Guesthouse is an awesome value and I highly recommend it to anyone going to Kanchanaburi.
Cheers and happy travels!
