I just spent 2 awesome days with my wife in a sort of short honeymoon trip out of Tegucigalpa.
HSP is a multipurpose accommodation serving many types of travelers, as they have (i) a beach club accessible to anyone for a fee and free to guests of the hotel&cabins, (ii) hotel rooms in the main building (iii) vacation rental houses belonging to private owners who let it for rent when not in use and (iv) the eco-lodge cabins, located at the back of the complex (2 min away from the beach by car, through the residential area)
We stayed one night in a single cabin and the second one in a double, so I can comment on both types.
First, let me suggest that you carefully double and triple check your reservation, as we suffered the awful experience of finding that there was no reservation for us (made 4 months in advance). A regretful administrative issue that I have to say was nicely solved by the management without prejudice for us.
Having gotten this little detail out of the way, let me underline that everything is top-notch for an eco-lodging facility. The cabins are cozy, air-conditioned, with ceiling fans, fully equipped with a kitchenette (or full kitchen if it's a double), cable TV and a private pool for cabin guests plus a bird watching spot at the lagoon 50 yards away. Location is unbeatable from the standpoint of experiencing the area: amidst 3 of the most relevant Garifuna communities around (San Juan, Tornabe and Miami).
Getting there is not a quick ride from Tela even with your own vehicle and I strongly advise you to drive a 4WD. Road to the place is a few miles long, and shortly turns into a rough road, bumpy and muddy even in the dry season (let alone in August). A detailed map is provided by the hotel upon reservation and there are indeed signs along the road (look out for them). As long as you get there in daylight there's no reason to get lost.
Eating in this secluded place? There is only one restaurant serving the hotel which is the one in the Beach Club (independently operated, so no charging to your room). It is not bad and they offer pretty good coco-locos served in freshly collected young coconuts (do not forget to ask them to open it for you when you are done so you can eat the soft meat inside). In any case, better food choices can be found in Tela. If you feel brave enough you can always try some of the eating spots in the Garifuna communities, but the most “tourist apt” would be Miami, quite a ride away – for that purpose, Tela is definitely a better choice. What you can certainly do is get your groceries either in a supermarket in Tela or in any of the local “pulperias” (small shops where you find anything but the sink, as many as you can count in any of the nearby villages) and cook it in the cabin facilities – great option for an unbeatable breakfast in the veranda …
Altogether outstanding and difficult to match, as long as you take into account the inherent limitations of a secluded place off the beaten track.
BTW, the Beach Club also offers day boat trips to main spots around, for your convenience
