After playing tourist in Santa Fe, with it's hundreds of hotels, restaurants, shops, galleries and museums, including the fabulous Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, we were ready for some serious R&R up in Abiquiu. Before we left NJ, (a month ahead) we booked tours of both Ghost Ranch and Georgia O'Keeffe's home and studio, knowing we would want to immerse ourselves iin "O'keefe country". Ah, Abiquiu, land of the white hills and Pedernal. We knew it would be glorious to see where O'keeffe painted. But to ensure that the experience would be even more special, we booked a night at Las Parras de Abiquiu.
Staying in the middle of a vineyard was intriguing, and after reading the glowing reviews and speaking with Arin and Stan we were hooked. The Bader's recommended a great little Mexican restaurant in La Rita and the historic Bode's Store, down the road a piece, was great for snacks and a little shopping.
This B&B only has two guest casitas and is surrounding by acres of trails, the vineyard, and in the near distance, those fabulous white hills. Our casita had a bathroom with floor to ceiling Mexican tiles, a kiva fireplace, radiant heated tile floors and the most luxurious of king-sized beds with a corn stalk designed headboard. Other amenities were, the terry robes, thick cotton towels, the CD player with a great selection of CD's, and the evening tray of delicious snacks. There was a hot tub, for use while viewing the starlit New Mexico skies, and if we were able to stay another night, or week, we would have. Alas, friends were waiting for us in Arizona for the next part of our trip.
The hummingbird feeders were very active along with other bird feeders throughout the property. Cheyenne, the dog, escorted us on a short hike on one of the trails that ended at the Chama River. Breakfast was served in their lovely kitchen across the courtyard, and consisted of the freshest ingredients and fruits. Arin's many Indian pots were beautifully displayed and when we checked out, we received a wonderful souvenir gift.
All in all, Las Parras de Abiquiu was an added highlight to an already great vacation.
