Having read mixed reviews, I was feeling quite anxious about going to this hotel, however, we all had a lovely time. We were a family of 4 (boys aged 5 and 8) who travelled with friends with kids the same age plus a baby.
We got there late at night and the transfer from the airport to the hotel was a bit long winded with tired kids in tow. It was a bit of a culture shock that people at the airport and the man putting the cases on the bus were sticking their hands in our faces for tips (despite the fact that we'd actually carried our cases out to the bus!) - we gave him a couple of English pounds which he looked at in disgust (this is all we had in our pockets!). Having read other people's reviews, I thought perhaps this was going to be how it was for the rest of the holiday, with people expecting tips constantly, however, once at the resort it was absolutely fine (we tipped at the end and got perfectly good service). We were initially put in a family room, which didn't have a balcony and the window faced onto the main road - I wasn't best pleased as the Egyptians have some strange obsession with honking their horns while driving at all hours and we had a very disturbed night. Spoke to the Deputy Manager the following morning who was very nice - there were no other rooms available that day but if we could be patient for one more night, he would get us a nice room. Following day, he was good to his word. My two boys loved the slides (so did we!) and my 8 year old was fine to go off with his pal on the slides as there were plenty of lifeguards around. Getting sunbeds was a bit of a pain. First morning, we managed to find 1 at about 10.30am so from then on, my husband did get up early to ensure we had beds where we wanted them. The kids pool was brilliant. My little one and his friend were in there all day playing - plenty of kids slides, a swing, jets of water etc and all knee height on an adult so very safe. We did find that after the first week, the kids got bored of the slides and we spent more time around the quieter pools. Beach was ok. Not your traditional beach with waves lapping the shore line - it's a man made beach with steps down to the water but I actually quite liked it. It was clean, it wasn't over-crowded. The beach bar did drinks all day and pizza, chips, salad, bread rolls over lunch. Take snorkels with you. Even in shallow water, the fish are amazing. I will always remember the sight of my 8 year old with a bread roll being swamped by literally hundreds of fish - angel fish the size of side plates, massive rainbow fish, puffer fish, little Nemo type fish - it was absolutely stunning.
I can be a bit picky but found the food to be fab. I'm not sure what people could complain about as there was a huge selection. The main restaurant could get busy but we never had to wait too long for a table. The Italian did gorgeous pizzas, delicious chicken tikka at the Asian and a mixture, including freshly made pasta in the Mediterranean. We tended to eat at the Med mostly, as the kids could go and get a fresh pizza from the Italian around the corner and bring it in, the guys were filling their boots with tandoori chicken, fish etc at the Asian and bringing it through so everyone was happy. Plenty of salads and loads of delicious puddings (not good as I far too many!). Most of us did get Egyptian belly in varying degrees - I got away lightly with one day and night, but from then on was absolutely fine. Similar with my friend however, it lasted longer with the guys. My husband had it the best part of 8-9 days and is still dashing off to the toilet now (and we've been back for 2 days!!). However, it didn't detract too much from the holiday as it wasn't bad enough to be cooped up in bed and he continued to eat and drink beer so it can't have been too bad!
We did a couple of trips. Went camel riding and got to do some quad biking (booked through Sokar Safari around the pool). Did the snorkelling boat trip, which for me was a highlight. Paid £90 for two adults and 2 kids, which included food and drink and was worth the money. Transfers for trips appeared a bit disorganised but once there, was absolutely fine. I've never seen such clear waters and the fish and corals were lovely. Kids had great fun leaping of the top of the boat and we ended up with some lovely photos off the onboard photographer (we paid £15 for 50 pics - he asked for £30 - you can get most things for half the asking price).
Mostly very positive. Only little things to moan about - the glasses are very small. It was so hot but you'd get a drink and it would be gone in three gulps!! We generally got a couple of drinks each, but because there were 4 adults and 4 kids in our group, that was a lot of drinks and they didn't like giving us that many! However, don't worry about ice cubes - they are definitely made fom mineral water. Also, the entertainment - or lack of it! This didn't really bother us, as by the time we'd had our meal, we settled down with some drinks while the kids played at the park. However, if you do like entertainment in the evenings, you may be left wanting. What litlle we saw was quite bad... Our kids didn't want to go in the kids club as again, it looked rubbish. We saw a couple of kids walking around behind the woman running it - waving flags while she tried to make them sing .... However, this did act as a good incentive for the kids to behave with the threat of kids club hanging over them!!!
There was a good mix of English, Russian, Germans and a lot of Arabs too. While most people waited their turn to get a ring or mat for the slides, it tended to be the Arabs who muscled in ( the women were the worst) and we did have to stand our ground to get them. People have commented about different groups of people pushing in at the restaurants. We didn't really find that - the restaurants are big enough and there was enough food not to worry about qeue jumping! However, we did notice on the boat trip that the Russians and Germans were incredibly greedy. Food and drink was included. Plenty of bottles of fizzy drink and water with cups so you could help yourself. However, while they were doing the safety talk when we set sail they were going and grabbing 2 or 3 bottles of coke and fanta etc to themselves rather than sharing - very greedy. Same with the food. We took smaller portions initially to make sure there was enough for everyone - they were literally shoving in and piling their plates up - very rude. The guy came around with melon slices - we all took 1 or 2 slices - there was a chubby Russian boy who literally was scooping the tray with both hands - very irritating!!
However - overall really good holiday. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Would def go back to Sharm El Sheikh. Not sure if I'd book this hotel as the kids did get bored of the slides and it was the waterpark which boosted the price. Perhaps we would book another hotel and do day trips to the water park...?
Final note - we flew with Viking Airlines. Had never even heard of them and again read a few bad things about them but we thought they were fine. Flights both ways were on time and no problems with check ins etc. Only point was that we had a night flight back. After a long day in the sun, we were all shattered and wanted to sleep but they had the aircon on full blast and we literally had goose bumps! Loads of people asked them to turn it down but then people at the front of the plane were complaining it was too hot! I suppose you can't please all the people all the time! They did sell blankets for £5 (I'd take a small blanket with me next time). Also, buy some food and drink at the airport to take onboard as it was expensive on the plane.
If you have booked this holiday, please don't worry - you will have a lovely time. After 2 weeks, I could happily have stayed for another few days (except I may not have fitted back in my jeans with all the gorgeous food!).
