I went to the Viva Sharm in mid January and I was pleasantly surprised by the weather. I knew it would be better than England but it was like the best English summer ever, some people who'd been to Egypt in January before said it was cooler than usual, but it was still swimwear during the day.
This must be about my sixth trip to the Red Sea but I usually stay in larger hotels, this is a small hotel and in low season it couldn't have been half full with about a 50/50 mix of Brits and Russians. The two groups didn't mix much but I met some nice people and everyone had a good time.
The rooms are fairly typical of Egyptian hotels large, light and airy, clean but fairly basic. For some reason the finish in the bathrooms is never as good as the rest of the room. I was in a twin, I don't know if they actually do doubles, and it contained two comfortable beds about 3/4 size. My first room didn't have a safe and I didn't want the hassle of using one of the safes behind reception so I changed it. If you get two keys on your keyring you've got a safe! The TV has two English speaking channels but mine wasn't tuned properly so for the first week if I wanted to watch TV it was CNN or nothing.
The main swimming pool does have the problems other people have mentioned and could be dangerous if you had small kids but the new one doesn't and is probably the better bet. Both were cold though.
I really went for the snorkelling and tried both beaches. Reef beach, turn left out of the hotel and keep walking until you reach the sea, 5-10 minutes, is the pay beach. Its probably easier to get in and out of the sea because there are steps at the end of the jetty. The other beach, which I preferred, you can get to using the bus which leaves at 09:00 and 14:00 returns at 14:15 and 17:00. You can walk to it in about 30 mins but I wouldn't like to try it in August! This has a floating jetty and you use a ladder to get in and out. The sea at both places is deep and reasonably warm. Most of the usual fish are there although not so many as at some places, perhaps because of the season.
There was no entertainment since it was low season but I certainly didn't miss it. The staff are great
The hotel is really let down by the food though. I found it well cooked and tasty but seriously lacking in variety. I've got no problems sticking to beef chicken or fish but they've only got about two ways of cooking each. I think they don't do anything adventurous in case somebody doesn't like it but end up pleasing no one. The salads were originally just basic salad vegetables although they did get a bit more adventurous later. The best night was Saturday when they did some Egyptian food. They've got a nice barbecue but only used it four times in the fortnight I was there.
It was a cheap holiday and worth the money but it could have been so much better if they improved the food.
