5 Norwegian friends spent 2 wonderful weeks at this hotel. Best service we have ever experienced!

Room Tip: All rooms were very good and open to the pools, but that was not disturbing.

My wife and I stayed at the Royal Savoy arriving 15th January. Yes… everything written about the staff is true! Very friendly, well groomed and very attentive, even if a little over-familiar at times.

The hotel is nice – large bedroom well maintained. My only issue with the room is that the bath tub was a bit small and seems to have been resurfaced with some sort of non-slip coating that had gone off-white and made bathing a bit unpleasant. The room had a nice large balcony overlooking the pool with matching wicker furniture.

The private lounge is comfortable but the bar (like all the bars in the hotel and Soho Square) is a bit limited on choice - No Southern Comfort and no dark rum for instance. The local beer was quite good and the Egyptian wine was a very pleasant surprise! (Try the Grand Marquis red!)

Lots of choice outside for lounging, but the hotel was only 25-30% occupied. The pools are fabulous and mostly heated to some extent or another. The lower pool at the RS was particularly warm. RS guests also have access to an outside hot-tub, sauna and steam room. Poolside service was very good. There was some building work going on adjacent to the RS pool area, but apart from being a bit unsightly, we weren’t disturbed by the going-on work.

We started off on a bed and breakfast basis but upgraded to ‘S class’ which is not quite ‘all-inclusive.’ Spirits are still restricted to two hours a day or are otherwise charged. Upon upgrading, the hotel confiscated the alcohol from my mini bar and replaced it with a selection of soft drinks which are not replenished. Very odd! They could have left it and just charged it to my account. On the whole, I’m not sure if the upgrade was good value at US$1,380 for the two of us for the week. The upgrade did come with a book of vouchers offering added benefits. We used the ones for the half hour stress relief massage (which wasn’t up to much) and for the laundry service which was very efficient.

The beach is nice but given it’s shared between the Savoy and Sierra hotels it can get a bit busy. Lots of sun shades make it look a bit cluttered. Snorkelling off the reef was great with plenty of colourful fish around.

As I said earlier, we did try the spa but compared to others we’ve used elsewhere, we thought both the facility and the massage was a bit lack-lustre.
Food is plentiful and always available. Great choice of restaurants and we managed a week without ever succumbing to the usual buffet. Food quality varies enormously – our favourites were the French restaurant at Soho Square and the Sea Food restaurant by the beach. We didn’t care much for the Indian and had one very, very poor offering at the Tappanyaki place which will be subject of its own report.

On the whole, we had a great time and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend either the Savoy or the Royal Savoy and we’ll probably be back.

Room Tip: Upgrade to sea or pool view.

“Amazing.. but poor bar service”

Everything about this hotel was amazing. The only issue we had was with the drinks. All drinks we had were extremely weak so we eventually turned to beer or wine.
