“An Awful Hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2007

After calling other hotels in Avalon that were booked, the Avalon Inn had vacancies to my surprise. After we entered the room and smelled the foul odor, I understood why there were vacancies. The room smelled like there were 900 pairs of sweaty sneakers hiding under the bed. I told the front desk about the odor and was told housekeeping would "check on it" and they never did. The bathroom tub, door, and wall had some left over hairs from previous clients - totally gross. They should pay more attention to housekeeping. I slept with as many clothes on as possible.

When I had checked on the status of the foul odor, I aksed the front desk if there were any irons to use. Since it was 2PM they told me to check back when I needed it. Sure enough at 6:30PM when I needed the iron, they were all gone. I waited at the front desk until tenants were called to return their iron so that I could use it. For all the money I paid for two nights, they can afford to put irons and ironing boards in all rooms. Actually, they should demolish the place and build new. It should be against the law for anyone to stay there.

The 'foul' odor in the room is called the SEASHORE. The Head Housekeeper actually paid a visit to the room and took care of the 'smell' with Febreeze, which when the guest complained about the odor, asked if we could use Febreeze. Said that would be fine. As far as irons, we don't stock them in every room, but loan them out from the office. This guest received an iron within 10 minutes of the request.

“The worst place ever”

A few friends and I decided to go to the Avalon/Stone Harbor area for the weekend. We tried booking a bunch of places and this place was the only one left with availability. Well, no wonder, because no one would ever choose to stay here. The owners are extremely rude, the place has strange odors and the rules let me say again the RULES are ridiculous. When you arrive they give you a list of rules, followed by rules all over your entire room including inside the cabinets. They even have a speaker (which also plays bad music) in the room that alerts you to the fact that if you are 15 minutes past check out, they will charge you an additional $150. We had a friend (staying somewhere else) come to meet us at our room to go to the beach and since they came in our room they charged us an extra person fee for the day. And when you ask about these fees they treat you like you are trying to hide something and pull one over on them. So, the rooms are really expensive for what you get....outdated and musky smells, management is terrible/rude, there are tons of hidden fees and you are so concerned with rules, you don't relax and have fun. Definitely the worst place I have ever stayed at anywhere down the shore.

It's usually the rule breakers and cheaters that complain about the rules. 99.9% of our guests love the fact that we keep a close watch on the place. They feel safe, secure and relaxed.

“Unfriendly Owners, Gross Rooms”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2007

This was by far the most disgusting hotel I've ever stayed at. The rooms are dark and moldy and OVERPRICED. We tried to book several hotels prior to settling for this one, and now I know why the rest of Stone Harbor/Avalon stays away from this place. The owners are extremely rude and keep a list of rules and have ridiculous charges. Check your credit card slip after checking out. As a local from the area, I tell everyone...STAY AWAY!

“nasty hotel, nastier owners”

I have never paid so much money to be treated so poorly - for $280.00 a night at a MINIMUM you expect to be treated civilly. But no, at the Avalon Inn the owners run their hotel with a senior week mentality. In other words, if you are a guest arriving without children and are in your 30's expect to be treated like a drunken teenager.

We, a group of 5 professional women in our 30’s, including a doctor, 2 nurses, and 2 micro-biologists, arrived for a girls weekend of relaxation. We weren't noisy, we did not party late and were in no way disruptive. All we did was arrive in staggered time periods because we were all coming from different regions of the northeast. Initially, two of us checked into this hotel. The remaining 3 women arrived late the following day. Upon their arrival, we carried their luggage up to our room intending to check them in at the lobby. We were very unnerved to realize that, as we walked up to our room, the owner of the hotel was tracking us by peering at us through a window from across the hotel. Before we even closed the door, the front office had called our room to berate us – claiming that we were attempting to sneak guests into our room and that we immediately needed to check these guests in or risk being evicted without a refund. We were obviously taken aback, as barely a minute had passed from the 3 women’s arrival to the hotel. The owners accused us of trying to sneak the others in the room, as if we couldn't afford the $15.00 charge. They were openly hostile to us and when we immediately went down to check in, the owners did not offer an apology and continued to remain hostile.

I would never recommend this hotel to anyone. In fact, we have contacted the Better Business Bureau regarding our poor treatment.

The 5 so-called professionals were actually 5 women on a party weekend. The original reservation was made by fax (still have a copy) for two (2) persons! NEVER said that there would be five (5). Tried to sneak the extras in the room without paying the extra $15. Some professionals!!? Can't afford to pay for the extras and tried to sneak them in from the fair stairway away from the office. If they had intentions of registering them, they would have done so right from the start.

“Great shore motel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2007

The Avalon Inn is friendly and hospitable! Rooms clean and spacious, although the bathrooms are tiny. They enforce nighttime quiet hours. Nice pool. You can leave your car there, use a visitor's shower/changing room with shower, and use their beach tags the day you check out if you want to stay all day. My only problem is with the morning-to-night piped reggae/rock pool music, which is audible in every room. They do turn it off at 8 pm, but it can get aggravating. Very reasonable for a beachfront hotel!
