The small, wrought iron "Alfiz" attached to the wall is so subtle a marque that we almost passed by. Located in the heart of the historical city with its twisting streets and hanging balconies, the Alfiz was originally a XVII century colonial house, impeccably restored. Stepping into the reception area, we were transported to a different time and place.
We arrived late at night and were shown to our room. After a hard day’s travel, our sagging spirits soared. The room featured a king-sized bed covered with a lace spread while the lamps, tables and chairs were tasteful antiques. The bath was large; its fixtures and amenities, noteworthy. A small, plant- filled balcony that opened to the street completed the room's landscape. We weren't able to check out other rooms, but the hotel’s website shows a full range of accommodations.
Breakfast was served in an intimate garden setting and consisted of an assortment exotic tropical fruits and juices, a bread basket, hot dishes to order, and delicious Columbian coffee. Other facilities: a library with wi-fi, a reading room, a small sun deck, and a roof-top dipping pool.
The Alfiz is stately and elegant, but never stuffy. Because the friendly staff always treated us with such genuine hospitality, we felt welcome and could easily relax. If ever we return to Cartagena, the Alfiz would be our hotel of choice.
