Just returned from a few days in Cartagena. As a female solo traveler, I was particularly concerned about safety. The Tres Banderas was the perfect home base for exploring the city. It's in the San Diego poriton of the Old City, which is in easy walking distance of everything, and is a bit quieter and slower paced than El Centro. I felt completely secure and comfortable at this hotel, which has a locked gate in the evenings. It's a charming little space - good comp breakfast, free computer access in the lobby, good A/C and ceiling fans (a must in sticky Cartagena), very clean rooms with sufficient space - and it's very quiet at night. The only tiny issues I had were the pillows (lumpy and too few) and the frequent lack of truly hot water in the shower -- though that seems to be extremely common in Cartagena (and in the sweltering afternoons, you'll welcome the cool shower.) I would highly recommend this hotel to any traveler - and particularly to those going solo.

Dear Bmoregal,
We are so happy you enjoyed your stay with us at Hotel 3 Banderas. We take great pride with our service quality. Since we have been here for 16 years, the comfort and the safety of our guests are our priority. Thank you for the advise on the pillows. We are already taking care of this in adding more pillows and purchasing new ones. We wanted to apologize for the frequent lack hot water, as we were undergoing pipes changes and renovations during the month of February, as it is necessary due that we are located in the Old City. We do have hot water 24/7. We can safely assure you of that! Our staff works very hard in making every single guests feel at home. Our vision is for every one to feel home away from home. We are glad you found us and thank you for your comments!
Our staff sends you their regards and we hope to see you again in the near future in our beautiful Cartagena.
Thank you,
Hotel 3 Banderas Team

This was a great hotel for the price and located in a wonderful area of the city. The rooms were very clean, hot showers, and a very good breakfast is included. The staff was very friendly and very helpful- especially for a couple whose Spanish is not wonderful! We had planned to stay somewhere different at the end of our trip, but came back to the hotel because they were so wonderful. I highly recommend staying here- you won't regret it.

We stayed here for four nights and enjoyed our stay. The location was great because it's in the old part of Cartegena and it's very easy to walk to the old City walls and fort. Also, easy to find restaurants and places to eat.
Our room was a good size on the second floor so we had a small balcony and could look across the City. I notice that one review said that cleaning was poor but we found the cleaners very enthusiastic and our room was always cleaned thoroughly by about 11.00 am. However, the lounger on the balcony was a bit scruffy but it didn't matter and I would have been happy to use it if I'd wanted. I think the rooms on the lower floors may be smaller and perhaps dark but ours was fine.
The breakfast was fine, cereal, fruit, egg, toast/jam and service was very quick. One thing I especially liked was that coffee was available to help ourselves from the breakfast room up until 2.00 pm ... this was great if we'd just been out for the morning.
Staff were really friendly and responsive.
We really enjoyed our stay and it was a lovely 'boutique' type hotel in the City ... so much nicer than one of the Chains where you could actually be anywhere in the world.

I have stayed here twice (which is testament in itself). They have basic (around COP 180,000) or superior rooms (around COP 200,000). The superior at 20k COP more (thats about £7 or $10 per night for a twin) are worth the premium. Our superior room was big enough and had a nice private terrace too. The smaller rooms are a bit dark and cramped. The whole place is being renovated room by room at present so you may be lucky and get a brand new room! This is not a party hotel, it feels safe (the front door is locked/monitored carefully by staff), and the rooms are set back from the road, almost in a courtyard style, so late night noise is not an issue. Most of the clientele we encountered were international travellers - 30somethings and older, or couples. There is a decent Colombian breakfast (freshly cooked eggs, fruit, cereal, toast) and free coffee available to guests, as well as internet and WiFi facilities. Additionally there is an in-house travel bureau for planning excursions or onward journies. The Colombian/Canadian owner (very convivial!) and his daughter were both very friendly and welcoming, as were all the front desk staff. The upmarket Sofitel Santa Clara hotel is just up the road and is well worth a visit for the bar alone. I would use this hotel again.

We stayed only one night, although we would have stayed longer if they werent so disorganised! The place was like an episode out of Faulty Towers! We didnt have a reservation and had just come off a terrible boat trip from Panama and all we wanted was to splurge on a room with aircon, hot water, TV and a nice comfy bed. A friendly man met me at the door when I arrived and showed me an upstairs room. I asked the cost (to which he said $100USD) and if it had aircon etc etc "of course" he says. We then go to check in and are left standing there for about 20 mins, then when i go to pay, i find out that room is $115USD. The nice man is now nowhere to be seen and aparently he doesnt run the second floor of the hotel, only the first floor. So we can have a first floor room (no where near as nice). So ok, we take the first floor room and i head straight for the shower. Ahhhh, there is no hot water!! My partner goes to ask and they forgot to tell us that the hot water is turned off in half the hotel as they are doing construction work, oh and they have no idea if it will be back on tomorrow!! I know hospitality is different in every country, but how can you not tell a guest there is no hot water??
Other than that, the breakfast was nice and the location in San Diego is excellent. If it werent for the mix around with the rooms and the hot water it would recommend this hotel.
