“Great Resort but not for westerners at all!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

I am from South Africa living in Shenyang which is North in China and westerners are very few with minimal English being spoken in the city. Having made a reservation in Sanya I did not expect a western way of life of any sort but at least I expected the hotel to be able to communicate with me.

Not once has anything been straight forward like booking a spa, tennis court etc. The staff just look at you and say they cannot understand, don't even offer to get someone there to help. When you tell them to call someone, you might get lucky and they do, then its still a 50/50 if they understand you else you must make the long journey to reception. I am not fussy and very patient but atleast in Shenyang the people try. The lack of English understanding and willingness to help really makes it difficult and more of a frustration than anything else. (I would expect this from a small cheap resort).

We also booked a seafood BBQ one new years eve where it is advertised that a live Philippine band would play and at 60 dollars I was expecting something good. Food was great, but they took about an hour to replace the salmon which I asked about 10 times to do as I cant eat shellfish, but there was no band and rather a karaoke screen with alot of drunk Chinese men singing so loud it was disturbing. No problems with it but it was not advertised like this and when I asked they, first did not understand, and then just said they sorry. We quickly ate and left as it felt like i was back at varsity.

Overall resort is massive with great pools etc but don't come here if you western....they not interested in you! I have been around the world, live in a city that cant speak English and this is the first time I am not recommending a place so its not that im fussy!

Room Tip: Deluxe sea facing room is good.

“Nice rooms, good breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2011

Stayed 2 nights at HoJo Sanya with family. Nice rooms with limited seaview. Location was slightly remote from city centre yet accessible by taxis. Basic gym-room facilities with good breakfast provision. Lots of tour groups from Russia and China yet the breakfast was re-stocked quickly within seconds. Staff were generally attentive. Downside was that there was only one shuttle-bus departure to downtown each day. Bathrooms seems a bit tired, saw some old shampoo bottles at the back end of the tub.

Room Tip: Request for high-level rooms. Those who face the beach will certainly be inspiring.

“Large clean spacious hotel in a good location at Sanya Bay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

We arrived at the hotel by taxi and were awaited by the hotels concierges. They took our bags while we proceeded to check-in. Always take a meter taxi and not the guys that prompt you into their cars, they are ALWAYS more expensive. The hotel is huge featuring around 1000 rooms while we were there the hotel was only at 25% capacity I think.

The reception desk was staffed by atleast 10. They however had some troubles finding our reservations though it should not have been hard to find under our family names..

Anyway we checked in into our deluxe seaview room on the 9th floor. The rooms are large clean and spacious and are equipped with all the amenities you might need including an ethernet cable for the free internet. Free wifi is available in the lobby.

The airconditioning works well (if you manage to figure out the Chinese remote control ;))
We requested a king bed which sleeps very well, it had a hard matress which I've liked alot.

There is hardly any noise from outside eventhough we were located streetside.

The hotel has one large indoor pool which is heated and several outdoor pools. Note however should the hotel be full of non chinese guests (which I think will not be the case very often) there could be a shortage of sun loungers.

The staff at the pool and poolbar hardly speak any English so if you have any other question other than the normal ones you'll have a hard time getting an answer from them. It has to be said though all the staff are VERY helpful and will do their utmost to help you.

Everything is kept clean and immaculate including the many trees and other various plants on the domain.

Drinks are priced okay at the pool but it's much cheaper to buy them at a supermarket or at the small store outside the hotel.

The breakfast starts early enough and ends SHARP at 10.30, don't bother coming later because all the food will be gone. Anyway 10.30 is a nice time to close so just come earlier!
The breakfast has both Chinese and Western options and varies during the week.

We did one hotel restaurant Kwok Heung Kok I believe which is also reasonably priced and has some good options though when it's calm in the hotel they might not have everything you need.

Finding places to eat in walking distance of the hotel is difficult except if you like street bbq's and shady places.

Take a cheap taxi (not the njam njam ladies on their mopeds, you'll know when you get there) and ask them to go to Jiefang Lu which is a big shopping street with supermarkets and others. Always use the meter you'll come out more expensive if you arrange a price.

While you are driving there there is one other big street on the left hand side of this street after a while you'll see other seafood restaurants. Keep going a bit further and there you will see more Western/American style restaurant buildings the food however is 100% Chinese but the quality is superb and cheap! Don't bother asking the concierges where to go they don't have a clue. The one we ate at most of the time was a stylish restaurant with dark yellow neon lights, you'll notice it when you drive by.

If you like good seafood at a good price go to the Chunyuan Seafood Plaza just behind Jiefang Lu. You can select the fish you want and then take them to a small stand to prepare everything for also a cheap price! You will pay a fixed price per type of fish you bring in. We had around 7 kinds and did not pay more than 69 RMB to prepare everything.

Back to the hotel the check-out was flawless and we left satisfied.

If you like the hustle and bustle China can bring you definately stay in a hotel in Sanya bay, if you like to stay in your hotel the whole time take a hotel at Yalong Bay (be aware there is litterly NOTHING to see/do in Yalong bay except for the three restaurants that are extremely overpriced). Yalong bay features more upscale hotels too but you'll pay the price.

If you need a city map the concierge desk has them, just ask one.

If you have more questions or want to know the exact names of the restaurants we went too message me please.

Room Tip: Try to be as high up as possible and definately avoid the first floor as this is also the way to the...

“Considerate staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

A very nice place to stay in Sanya. It is my 2nd time to stay in this hotel. I took my parents, relatives and kids back for the beautiful view and delicious foods there I want to share with them. Different families flied from different place and gathered in Sanya for a luxury weekend. Once we left the taxi, the door boy gave me a card with the the taxi number we just took from the airport in case we would left something. One of my relative 's birthday was the day he checked in, we enjoyed a very delicious and free birthday cake the staff provided. Sorry for we forgot in such a big family meeting. And how lucky they arranged it for him. Their considerate attracked me back.

Room Tip: higher floor better view and quiter

“nice, clean facilities but service needs loads of improvement”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2011

pleasant stay overall until check-out when the cashier insisted on charging me two nights for a one night stay. finally ironed things out with the assistance of an english speaking russian employee.

good:
facilities are clean and well-kept.
lots of pools and nice room
beach was nice enough -- not spectacular but ok.
the chinese restaurant serves good food but due to insufficient fans, was hot and humid

bad:
most of the employees have not learnt the art of smiling
breakfast buffet will SHUT DOWN at 8:30am sharp. lights+fan OFF and food gets cleared immediately; i saw guests chasing down carts of food trying to get some morsels of food.

when leaving the hotel to catch my train, i was literally stuck in my taxi for 15mins cause no one bothered to manage the traffic in the drop-off area, right in front of the lobby. taxis, limos, vans, vip's cars, -- all squeezing for space there with one lane left to move and that was used for customers unloading their bags! utter chaos and employees were rude when i requested their assistance to manage the mess.

nice place but poorly trained staff makes it an average stay, at best. go with patience.
