“Best experience in China yet...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011

We stayed here for 3 nights in a 2-storey villa with 2 bedrooms. There is a separate building for receiving guests or hanging out, and a lovely private pool and jacuzzi. Downstairs bathroom comes with a steam room as well as outdoor shower. The only complaint is having to walk outside to go upstairs - it does rain fairly often here! Everything was done like a 5-star tropical resort, starting from the fresh coconut juice upon arrival all the way to the services offered. Although they were not fluent in English, I thought they were all very well-trained with enough English and very helpful and service-oriented. I mostly forgot that we were in China. However, it would still be hard to compare this place to other 5-star places in Thailand or Jamaica, for example - we have to acknowledge that we are in China after all.

When we were there, it was not busy, and we had most of the beach to ourselves with our own little huts, napping and reading on the beach. Although the beach was very shallow, we kept going and still didnt get to anywhere that we could swim. We came back and swam in the meandering pool instead.

One thing that stopped me from giving it 5 stars is certainly the food. The food was okay, and certainly expensive by China's standard, but the selection was limited, and the resort was nowhere close to any other restaurants. Venturing to places in town was not as easy as we thought - very much like the rest of China. Chinese food was fine. I tried some of the western dishes, like Lasagne, but it was not edible because it was not cooked through and had to send it back. We ended up eating the same food again and again and that definitely did not make the vacation more enjoyable.

The spa was beautiful and the receptionist spoke English well to explain treatment.

All in all, knowing I was in China, this hotel exceeded my expectation.

“Honey moon”

Our stay in banyan tree is fantastic. The whole environment is so private and we enjoy our honey moon there. We are very thankful for the special arrangement made by banyan tree (flowers, wine, cake). We will definitely come back again.

“Great (for China), Good (for a Banyan Tree)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2011

It's easy to forget in Sanya that you're not in China. And that's what detracts from the Banyan Tree experience to gives this a 4/5 rather than 5/5. It's a great place to get away, so long as you remember which country you are in.

This Banyan Tree is archetypal China with the surface being immaculate but things are not quite so rosy beneath the surface. Staff can meet and greet in English very well, but only about half of those know more vocabulary than that. The complex is starting to show the signs of China-style poor maintenance - put a plaster over the top rather than fix the underlying issue. (e.g. curtains missing sections so don't fully cover the windows, lotus pool around the bath tub was a puddle not a pond as it leaked, decorative ponds stagnating, the resort's pier just a unsightly concrete monstrosity bordering the beautiful beach) but overall it was still an excellent getaway.

The resort had excellent privacy; pretty good sound proofing of the villas; very well designed, comfortable villas and gardens; and excellent service - some staff even remembered us by name throughout the visit, even after only one encounter. There is definitely no need to leave the resort during your stay.

The only real issue of the whole visit was the food. I wouldn't try any of the Western food on the menu as the flavour, ingredient quality and portion size is somewhat dubious - especially for those prices. However, the local Chinese style dishes were excellent.

Two tips:
- As with any resort in China - I would recommend going with a Mandarin speaker.
- Book the hotel's airport transfer. While 3 times the price of a taxi, the hotel driver knew the way, knew the English for "Banyan Tree", had air conditioning that worked and most importantly - had brakes that worked.

With all this in mind, I'd definitely return if I was in Sanya again.
