“Beautiful Hotel, will stay again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

Really nice hotel, great service, rooms are clean, the sea view is lovely. I have 3 young children and they all enjoyed the swimming pool and the food was good.
Staff was courteous and friendly. All spoke fluent English. Only the room service staff I had difficulty communicating with. The only downfall is the price of the food in the hotel. They charged me fifty sterling pounds for 4 frozen ice-cream pots (small) and 3 cokes and a bottle of mineral water. Now that is not very good. We are in China, not Japan.
But, apart from the price of food other than that I have no complaints.

“Don't expect too much to avoid disappointment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2011

Some of the best service I have experienced in any hotel in China, if it wasn't for that this would get a poor rating. I was persuaded to upgrade to the 'recently renovated and therefore not smokey' executive floor as there were no non-smoking rooms and reviews are not good for the older rooms. I was taken aback to find the bathrooms had not been renovated, or not much.

But the place grew on me over time and I found the staff excellent.

Nice pool but don't be mistaken into thinking this is a beachside hotel, the pool is the only place you will want to swim.

Don't expect too much from this older generation Chinese hotel and you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: Pay more for executive floor, be sure to book a no smoking room

“Shabby Hotel with no beach but smiling staff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2011

We stayed on the executive floor where the rooms had been recently renovated. Rooms are really small for a 5-Star Hotel with very ordinary furniture. In-room safe was not even fixed to the wall and even a lady could cary it easily away. The bathroom had only got a new wall paper. All the rest (sink, tub, fititngs etc) is at least 25 years old and had not been changed.
With our booking we had breakfast included in the executive lounge on 14th floor which was OK, but by far not to be compared with the one downstairs where we could go for 2 days as there was a water break in this lounge. So better book breakfast downstairs.
The lobby was locked up due to cosmetic works- no other possibility to have a after dinner drink and no service in the garden (although the weather was still around 30°C).
Pool looks nice, but the pool side restaurant was 'out of order', only 4 very dirty long chairs available, but no matresses and no towels for swimmers ... And of course no service either. - During high tide the sea is coming right to the hotel garden wall - so there is no beach left and no possiblity to have a swim in the sea - the main reason why we chose this hotel. Besides the garden door to the Sea is locked. We complained about this and the secretary of the GM came to appoogize but during the whole 10 days stay we never saw any kind of supervisor nor GM.
However staff was friendly and always smiling, but very unexperienced.
The Spa and fitness had an very odd smell - it is undergroudn - so we decided not to use it.
By far not a Shangri-La standard (and certainely not a five star nor a 4 star for Europeans), and I don't think it will ever be.

“Not Shangri-La Standard”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2010

They are presently doing cosmetic renovations but it is so far off a Shangi-La standard it is doubtful it will ever be.
Hotel is weather beaten, smoke infested, shabby and worn down.
Service was friendly and helpful and staff very willing as they develop Shangri-La level skills.
Not worth the price.
