“Quite overrated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Apart from a good location, walking distance to most sights, and reasonably good service, this hotel has modern well equipped rooms (garden wing) that are nonetheles on the small side, skimpy and impractical shower rooms; suites in the main residence are ok but terribly overpriced. Breakfast is not up to Asian standards.
A big deception, not a 5 stars hotel!
(ps: I never had toilet paper of such poor quality, not even in the USSR!)

“Nice hotel - good location”

Stayed here 5 nights, far enough away to be quiet, but close enough to be able to walk everywhere. Very friendly staff, bear in mind Garden rooms have been refurbished, but are big walk in showers rather than baths, however there are different style rooms. Free wifi but iffy connection, very nice almost French style, nothing is too much trouble. Pool area nice to relax in.

Best bit for us was it certainly is one of the top hotels in the area, with pool, and walking distance to everything including the excellent night market. Would recommend it.

Room Tip: Garden rooms have balconies, choose something higher than xx6 to keep away from road noise and get s...

“Great location, supportive staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

Mason Souvannaphoum has a great location in Luang Prabang which is importatnt to participating in the city's most interesting activities. Walking to the monks' alms giving, the early morning market and night market, downtown shops and restaurants/cooking schools is a breeze. Two old French Villas make up the hotel which has traditional French Colonial decor in some rooms. After looking at a few, we chose a newly decorated room on the ground floor looking out on the back garden. Our oversized king bed, silk tapestries and new bathroom were fresh and appealing. The desk staff give great directions and are very helpful. However, the reception area is small and there are no large places inside to sit or read, no real lobby or common rooms. The small breakfast room and bar area are adequate but food service outside breakfast is limited to lunch on the lawn. This did not matter much to us as the town is just down the street. The continental breakfast is stingy and almost as expensive as the full breakfast so booking a room with full breakfast included is recommended. Outside a narrow but dramatic pool is a great place for a quick swim or outdoor relaxing. Drinks are pricy and the staff could use some bartending lessons but enthusiasm, decent beds and prime location are the reasons to stay here.

Room Tip: Rearward rooms are quietest but the hotel is set back from the street so quieter than most.

“Luang Prabang charm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

The staff here are very friendly and helpful - the level of service is so high. The rooms are lovely, bed comfy, breakfast excellent. It's well located for exploring LP, one of the most charming places in the world! It's just outside the main tourist area and quiet and peaceful. My only criticism is that the pool isn't heated but that's being over-critical.

“Colonial French style in Luang Prabang”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011

This small boutique hotel has old world charm (being the former residence of Prince Souvannaphouma), a beautiful garden setting and all modern conveniences. It's a short walk to central Luang Prabang. The staff are charming - you may even find yourself in a game of petanque with them during quiet times.
