Researched LP onsite 10 years ago and this was the most favorite place to stay in my book. So couldn't wait for this time. But so sorely disappointed; must be new management; bed linen and pillows (4) were first rate. Hot water terrible; on and off; balcony nice but ceiling fan only on the balcony not in the room. Terrible problem because after the first night air con didn't work and we didn't catch it until too late, 9.30 pm, and when we went to find a solution (another room was vacant, as it turned out), there was NO ONE, no one person in the hotel!!
We were alone; no other guests; fortunately other rooms were unlocked. No safety box; of course no tv, not that we wanted one; towels were hard to the extreme. Restaurant has been turned over to someone else; never ate there. No bar, just old bottles of champagne in the frige; afraid to try. Come on, people, this could be a fabulous property; just no attention to detail for $80/night. Stayed at Belle Rive for $120 for last night with great results.

The location and rooms are really great. Very nice view from the balconies. The breakfast is nothing special, but you dont expect a big buffet at a small Hotel. With 80 $ a little overpriced, but for a memorable experience in Luang its worth the money. Staff is nice and very friendly.
The only inconvenience: The door is closed at 11.00 pm and no doorbell ! The guy who sleeps behind the reception desk (!) is certaily harder to wake up than the neighbours. Then again, Luang Prabang is not the place for excessive nightlife.

I stayed at the Calao hotel for two nights and was very impressed with the quality of service. The room was beautiful and the star feature was definitely the balcony overlooking the mekong. The bathroom could have been slightly better but I can't complain.

We stayed here our last night in Luang Prabang because the hotel we had been staying at was not able to extend our stay. I think an $80 room in Luang Prabang should be a little more refined than the Le Calao Inn, but overall it was fine. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable, the two most important things in my opinion. The room was a little rough around the edges (hole in the bathroom screen, etc.) but it was well located and the balcony was quite nice. The highlight of the hotel is the staff - the friendliest we came upon in all of Laos.
