Stayed 2 night 24th-26th Dec 2011.
Pros
(1)Room was well above expectation. Room was comfortable and bathroom was excellent.
(2)Breakfast spread and quality was reasonable. Love the croissant and bacon.
(3) the Kantoke set dinner was simply awesome. They had 2 choices, both was excellent especially for the Asian taste bud with appreciation for authentic spicy Laos/Thai cuisine. Chao Nang Restaurant staff was well trained namely Bang and Cambodian male waiter(forgot his name).
(4) The reception front desk staff was ok.
Cons
(1) Housekeeping needs training and needs to be extra careful on inventory reporting. Had an unpleasant episode during checkout.
When it was time to check out from the hotel we suddenly discovered that they don't accept American Express (it is the only credit card we had) even though the reservation via Internet was perfectly made with this AXpress card, and we were told to go withdraw cash from the ATM mashine from the (AX card), that says the locals even have no idea about the difference between a credit and a debit card. So the manager of the hotel said he wouldn't let us out untill we pay in cash, and when I told him that they are obliged to make a discount in this case (they don't pay a commission to the bank by using their terminal) no reaction followed. So for 1 night we had to say bye bye to 500 USD in cash. And I can imagine that it's not a single case, you make a trip around the world to get there and they just say: oops, we don't accept AX. That sucks. And the rooms were full of ants as everything is made of wood. The hotel is too far from center of the town, well it's not a big deal. But they don't even provide a taxi if you want to get out for a dinner to the downtown. If you miss the only shuttle at 5 p.m. then you have to wait 40-50 mins untill a tuk tuk comes for you from the town and you all dressed and perfumed will blow out your glamorous look during a 10 min ride through all the smokey and dusty streets. Well that's quite a nightmare for 1 day of stay. Just don't go to this hotel if you don't want to waste your money in vain.
I do agree with RTWTripping. This hotel is such a nice hotel. Well decorated, friendly and helpful staff, great breakfast, beautiful settings, etc. My family will stay in Le Palais Juliana again for our next visit for sure!
This is a great hotel. The rooms are really comfortable, the pool area and hotel grounds are beautiful and the staff are very competent and welcoming.
The hotel is a little of of town but that suited us just fine. After a big day walking around town and going on various excisions (like a trip to the Kuang Si Falls, a Mekong River Cruise and a day on a moped) it was good to be back in the peace and quiet of the Palais Juliana.
One highlight of the stay was the hotel restaurant. The breakfast was sometimes a buffet (when there were more guests) and sometimes a mixed buffet / a la carte set-up. Each way was good.
We had dinner at the hotel restaurant twice and both times it was first class. We had a few meals in town and they weren't nearly as good as the restaurant at the Palais Juliana.
We'd stay here again. Highly recommended.
