Zen Namkhan Boutique Resort was perfect. From the very first encounter with the charming and gently attentive staff, who offered a delicious fresh welcome drink and a warm smile, through the delightful surprise of finding a natural pool equipped with little fish, to the walk through the tropical gardens to the cool, breezy villa overlooking the lazily flowing river, all was as it should be. I loved the gentleness of the ambience, the calm quiet of the jungle surrounding us, the morning birdsong, and most of all the friendliness and genuine care for our comfort shown by our hosts Luc and Moon and their extremely efficient concierge Khamsaen. The room was very comfortable, with a verandah overlooking the jungle and the river equipped with chairs and plenty of cushions. It was a perfect place to spend a restful hour before evening drinks at the bar in the central meeting area, which was open on all sides to the gardens, and cooled by slowly moving ceiling fans. The food, again served in the central area, was delicious, every meal, whether western or Lao, a triumph, the kitchen being supervised by Moon who, apart from being an excellent organiser and a charming host, is an accomplished cook! Activities at the resort can be as active or as relaxed as you like. The staff cheerfully arrange for us a trip to the local waterfall, an elephant ride in the jungle, and visits to local weaving workshops. My stay was crowned by a massage at the resort's Japanese-style bath house, followed by Japanese tea served in a tiny cup beside a gently tricking waterfall, an experience that left me floating and perfectly at peace with the world. I came away from Zhen Namkhan relaxed, refreshed, and determined to go back.
