Review of Mekong Estate
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 Aug 2012
Since returning home, we have recommended this comfortable hideaway to friends, I wish our time there had been longer.
After enjoying the old part of town for four nights, in a quality, central hotel, busily exploring markets, restaurants, waterfalls and other tourist attractions, the Mekong Estate was a lovely, laid back way to conclude our Luang Prabang holiday.
Two of us stayed in the Sunset house studio for three nights in the middle of July and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, even after coming down with a 24 hour tummy bug. The friendly staff were so attentive, and genuinely concerned, preparing rice soup for us, which was just what was needed.
I casually walked to the night market in the old town and back, past some interesting monuments, bakeries, soup stalls, Temples, silver stores, back packer accommodation, and, some major Government compounds, this took twenty minutes each way. Alternatively, I could have caught a tuk tuk for $2.
The Mekong Estate is situated in an area where non tourist population reside. Locally you find street food, small grocery shops, some Pharmacies, a bank and five minutes' walk away is a large locals market. If you had transport, there are interesting eateries away from the old tourist part of town.
The Mekong Estate has a 25 meter swimming pool with a waterfall, it was perfect for doing laps, or just gazing at the breathtaking Mekong view. Next to the Studio, we had access to a communal kitchen that had all the appliances one could need, and, fresh coffee.
I had read other reviews describing cocktails and snacks by the pool in the evenings. Not while we were there, this must be in the high season.
I didn't expect this place to be our favorite accommodation of the trip, but, it was.
I look forward to a further visit next time we're in Laos.

A few very positive aspects but several significant negatives I would have wanted to know. First the positives: truly lovely pool and view of the Mekong river; bikes to use to ride into town; spacious bedroom; nice breakfast; great local market nearby; nice staff; local monks get alms right in the village which was interesting and no other tourists around. Problems: this hotel is off a main road and you walk down a dark dirt road in a dirty village with lots if garbage and dogs - yes it gives you a sense of life in Laos but there were so many dogs barking and fighting right behind my bedroom at night that we could not sleep much at all - truly like living behind a kennel. The hotel is a 15 min bike ride into main part of town or a few dollar per person tuk tuk ride which adds up. I would have rather been closer to town. Nothing to eat at all near the hotel which has no restaurant and room has no kitchen. We stayed in the two bedrom villa which was really two bedrooms seperated by a hot unairconditioned large room that really could not be used. Consequently it was not really a family apartment but two seperate bedrooms which was not how it appeared. Overall mediocre value and major sleep issues that should not exist at this price.

It’s a daily task for our team to providing you with the highest quality service and your feedback is extremely important to us, so thank you for sharing your comments with us. In fact, Mekong Estate Residence is the unique “hotel” with a pool overlooking the Mekong River in Luang Prabang. Unesco doesn’t allow swimming pool in Heritage area also called Peninsula. So, as many villages in the city, Ban Saylom, is on dirt roads and should improve in the future. That is in an issue in the hand of local authorities.
Concerning, the dogs we discussed this point with the neighbors. Hopefully, that doesn’t happen often. We are aware about the disappointment and the disturbance. Sorry about that.
The “Guests Information Book” provides many advices to get the best of the residence during your stay: catering (Lao and international cuisine delivery at home), culture, cruises, transports, events, etc. About food, the Sunset House, where you stayed, has a large full equipped kitchen that the guests can use on request.
For those who prefer to stay closer to town, we recommend The Reader House.
Your comments will help us to improve and ensure the comfort and enjoyment of future guests. Dear travelers don’t be shy when you stay at Mekong Estate Residence, please ask our staff they will be always keen to help you.

A beautiful place overlooking the Mekong river. We have stayed in many top hotels around the world and this is one of the best. A spacious and beautifully decorated villa with two amazing terraces overlooking the mekong; gorgeous pool; delicious breakfast ; excellent room service food if you want to stay in and free bikes to go into Luang Prabang for dinner if you want to eat out. A very special place which I would highly recommend.

Had three nits here during our visit to Luong Prabang and said “amazing experience”.

On the bank of quite river of Mekong and just a few minute walk from the downtown, this comfy villa is romatic place to stay. The charming architectures and local surroundings made a fabulous experience. Me and my husband were in the Sunset House (second floor) for 3 nights. It was lavishly designed for separately living area, bancony, and spectacular views overlooking the river, bed comfortable. Our days here start with savoring delicious sunrise breakfast and afternoon tea was relaxing before several sunsets. Also the garden is nice and the swimming pool was lovely. Staff was extremely friendly, efficient and service was excellent.

Getting out to the downtown, let's try a tuktuk! It was cheap and plentiful of, but almost everytime we want, the drivers from hotel kindly took us without charging, alternative using free bicycles. The only thing we dislike is the air that it may get thick from local kitchen over burning wood, but it probably every in Luang Prabang.

We definitely recommend this place for traveler who is keen on tranquility and comfortable stay but still touch the local, an amazing experience.

We do appreciate all your compliments and especially the one about the staff. We’ve already shared it with them. Ban Saylom Riverside is a branch of Mekong Estate Residence located right on Mekong bank few minutes walk or ride from post office and just few meters from the main local market “Phosy” which is very colorful. Sunset House is a 4 bedrooms private villa with a huge panoramic living-room (rosewood floor) overlooking the Mekong River and the lap pool (25m). When the villa isn’t rent by a family or a group of friends we can rent separate rooms. Many guests plan to come 3 days and stay longer or come back one week (average). We hope to welcome you again soon.
Sorry about the burning wood from the neighboring kitchen. The locals keep some traditions in this area like around the country, as you guessed.

Just got back from Mekong Estate and loved it. We were traveling with another family, so booked the Sunset House and housed the children upstairs (in the VIP quarters!) while we parents took the downstairs rooms. The whole house is absolutely gorgeous, beds are very comfortable. Showers take a while to heat up, but no problem. Although there is no restaurant, breakfast is provided (eggs, bakery basket, fruit salad, juice, tea/coffee) and staff will order take out from several restaurants and set up the dining table should you wish to eat dinner at home. There is a sizable market a 5 minute walk down the road - handy for fruit, snacks and sundries. Getting into town was never a problem - tuktuks are plentiful and often the hotel driver took us in at no charge. The pool is NOT heated, so the water is pretty cold and very deep. Although we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, I wouldn't recommend this hotel for children under the age of 4 (too many potential dangers). Our almost 5 year old was able to handle it, but we had to be very attentive. Lovely spot!

Beautiful villas and grounds in a great position on the Mekong and in a very homely part of town. Only a ten minute walk or short bike ride into the main town, or 1 minute to a large local market.
The most fantastic staff who made us feel that we were home from home.
The only downside is that during the dry season there is a low river in front of the hotel and there are constant lorries collecting sand for the airport extension. Go during or after the rainy season. That means you will miss the slash-and-burn smokey air too.
