We spent two nights in The Ace Hotel (Hotel AS), Zagreb (www.hotel-as.hr) and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff were friendly and attentive, a couple of them spoke reasonable English and shared our ironic sense of humour. Our room was old world in its decor and very satisfactory. The restaurant specializes in fish, but serves other dishes. We enjoyed the stuffed squid and a red wine from Dalmatia.
The great advantage of this hotel from the sightseeing point of view is that it's only a five minute bus ride from the centre of Zagreb, and the bus stops outside the hotel. Despite being so close to the city centre, the hotel looks like it's in the middle of the countryside!
On the morning of our departure, the hotel manager jumped up from a meeting he was holding in the restaurant to offer us a glass of champagne. We told him that we had to drive to Ljubljana, but he stayed talking to us for a while, then offered champagne a second time. It was tempting, but we had to refuse!
