“Great Hotel reasonably close to Ban Jelačić Square”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Chose this Hotel based on reviews on tripadvisor. Location wise, its reasonably close to where most hotels are concentrated in Zagreb. Quite a few tourist attractions are located within walking distance. Unfortunately I arrived in the middle of horrible weather, so spent most of my time in the Hotel for the warmth!!

Reception was quick and very efficient. I am not sure how crowded the Hotel was but was impressed that the gentleman behind the reception was already expecting my arrival. Typical of Hotels of this size, there was only the one person at the front desk without anybody to assist with luggage. One thing I did like however was that I didnt really have to enquire about anything. Free internet and wifi passwords were given without prompting and I was reminded about the complementary breakfast the next morning. Its the first time I was staying at any of the Best Western Chain and when I booked the Hotel, I also elected to join their frequent guest program. I was upgraded to a the executive room because of my membership of the program.

I believe the Hotel was completely refurbished recently, so expect to find all the modern conveniences in the room. A room card is issued and the door lock is based on proximity sensors by the door. When you enter the room and insert the keycard into a slot by the door, the airconditioning switches on and window shutters open. The room (executive) included a couch and working desk and felt reasonably new. Worth noting is that the windows in the room open, but the moment you open a window the airconditioning immediately stops. A lot of thought has gone in to make the Hotel energy efficient. The bathroom was a decent size and I thought the Yves Rocher toiletries a nice touch.

The best thing about the Hotel and also a primary reason I chose it was the availability of wifi throughout the Hotel with no limitation on the number of devices you could connect with. As a long time Mac user, I have been frustrated in the past with Hotels that force you to choose how many devices (iphone, ipad, notebook) you are allowed to connect to the wifi or even worse, force you to use the public areas to access the wifi. I am looking forward to the day where Hotel owners wake up to the fact that ease of connectivity is a major factor for selection of Hotels.

All in all a pleasant stay and I agree wholeheartedly with all of the other positive reviews. This Best Western definitely deserves its place higher in the rankings than many of its 5 star competition.

Room Tip: Executive rooms are worth the slight premium for the space

“Great room, breakfast and wifi - so we came back.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

Zagreb was central to our holiday around the Balkans. We stayed two nights around New Year and this hotel was so nice we came back for two more before flying home, mid January.

Arriving by train and then heading out by bus, twice, it proved idea. Even with baggage it's an easy walk from the train station, and slightly further to the bus station. You can explore all the main city sites walking out from here – a few minutes to Ban Jelačić square and up into the old town. It's only a block from the green horseshoe of parklands.

We treated ourselves to a “superior room”. It was lovely and spacious with comfortable, quality furnishings - a lounge suite, dresser, chairs and table. The bed was comfortable.

I was happily surprised to find my ipad picked up the wifi signal. Our laptop had worked everywhere, but this was the first hotel (out of 7) where our ipad and iphone reliably connected to wifi. There was a range of free channels on the TV, including one apparently for grownups.

The bathroom was sparkling clean with a deep bathtub and a hang-up shower hose. There was a well-lit mirror above the basin and a make up mirror too. Usual provisions, including facial tissues, flannels, shower gel, shampoo, moisturizer cream, and soap at the basin, were provided.

Our first room included a bidet, but not the room for our return visit (despite the same type of booking). This didn't bother us but if you desire a bidet you'd better request it.

The outlook was over a parking/courtyard area and very quiet. The hotel is in a quiet street, in any case.

Breakfast was a glutton's delight. There was an array of seafood (which I didn't touch but looked fantastic), two kinds of pancake and fillings, many hot dishes – various meats, scrambled eggs, grilled vegetables, mushrooms, and more than I can recall. The cereals and toppings for these were plentiful. There was a choice of several sliced and whole fresh fruits and several stewed ones, yoghurts, many breads, generous platters of cold meats and cheeses, a cold “fried” bread, pastries and traditional dessert cakes. The coffee was self-serve from a flask, with hot and cold milk options. Also various juices and champagne on ice.

One evening we were tired and decided to eat-in at the little bar near the lobby. A coachload of hungry Italians arrived and all staff were called to action. The young man behind the bar continued to look after us well, despite having to gallop to and fro to help manage the rush. The meal was also nice. Staff at reception were friendly and competent.

To sum up: “she was a little beaut” and we'd love to stay a third time.

Room Tip: Go for a "Superior room".

“Favourite Zagreb hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

I prefer this hotel whenever I'm staying in Zagreb, although some others may be better even, in some aspects. But I like to closeness to the city center, the cozy domestic atmosphere, fantastic breakfats, nice and open staff and the fact they responsibly think about the enviroment in terms of water and electricty policies. The rooms are not that spacious, but very cozy and quite enough for a buiness traveler, with all basic functions, like wi fi, mini bar, hairdrayer, plasma TV, etc. There is secured parking lot next to the hotel free of charge for the guests, which is very conviniet, I think. And if you are a regular guest, check in is less than a minute long procedure. I can only warmly reccomend this place.

“superior stay in Zagreb”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

We arrived on New Year's Eve. The Astoria surprised us from its frontage because inside it was a pretty swishy hotel. We stayed at the big hotel near the train station last year but this was a better experience.
We had a "superior" room and it was pretty grand with a writing desk and a full lounge suite. The techno aspects were interesting, with automatic shutters that opened when your key card is inserted and reliable wifi. It was quiet and comfortable and well located for a quick walk into Ben Jelacic square. The breakfast was diverse and plentiful and made a good start to the day. They were flexible with our arrival and departure times, which was a comfort.

Room Tip: Treat yourself to a "superior" room

“superb location, tiny single rooms, friendly staff and king's breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

I've been several times in this hotel and always had a good quality stay there, mainly because of the location and friendly staff, however single rooms which I was limited to, very sooooo tiny, simply too small, I think I've never been in smaller rooms in my life. Since I also had to work in the room, I was limited to the tiny table which is I think just a little bit bigger then my laptop, which is simply useless for papers etc. Bed is huge and comfortable, but there is no room for a suitcase if you have a larger one so I had to jump over it constantly to get to the shelf with clothes or to the window. Oh yes, also windows are good, but there was no view since the whole this side where the single rooms are are looking at the wall, really not recommended to claustrophobic persons. So, I generally disliked the room, but then shower gel and shampoo and the body lotion are great and high quality, also all is very clear and tidy. I also did not like the fact that room doors slam so hard that it waked me up several times, since guest are generally quite insensitive and actually not aware of the fact that doors are so noisy. Breakfast is I think the best I had in all the region as it is so rich and greatly decorated and tasty, some of the travelers put a photo, and there is so much of the staff you could it, from shrimps and sea food to tens of different jams and hot dishes, juices, different coffees and 10 different cheese and meat, simply great. So, its really a difficult review for me to write, there so many so many contras and so many pros!

Room Tip: Just try to get some which is not tiny, although I know singles are usually unreasonably tiny, I thi...
