I have been in this small hotel (Tsar Asen) last month for few days and I was really delighted. The location is great - right in the centre of the city and you can get anywhere really quick by foot. The hotel seems recently renovated and the room where I was with my husband had a nice bedroom, airconditioning (very necessary as the weather was hot) and a view towards the street and the central park The service people in the hotel were nice and helpful.

I reserved a room following advice in one of the E.Europe travel guides and couldn't have been more disappointed. This is actually a private house with a few rooms parading as a hotel. Filthy bathrooms, bugs, an extremely rude flip-flopped sweaty owner on site. Spent two weeks in Bulgaria and never encountered anything worse than this so-called "hotel". The place has since been taken off the mentioned travel guides and I am surprised to spot it here. I was comparing reviews for real hotels for an upcoming visit to Sofia and feel it's my responsibility to post a warning. This place can really spoil your stay. Best left avoided.
