“Room with a view!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

I stayed at Hostal Iskay for three nights total; two before heading to Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu and one night after MP.

The best thing about staying in Hostal Iskay is without doubt the view you have of the Mountains and the Ruins. Thats not to say that the hostal doesnt have anything else going in its favor!

Whilst the rooms are simple i.e. no heating or TV, its more than adequate considering the price; it was the rooms were clean and there were extra blankets available to keep out the cold of Andean nights and importantly for the traveller it had hot running water for the shower!

The hostal only has a small number of rooms and as such it has a friendly and intimate vibe.

Service was very good and staff were more than happy to listen to my poor attempts at Spanish.

Ollanta is such a small village that there is hardly any noise other than the river and the whole place has such a relaxed and friendly feel to it.

Its easy to see why Hostal Iskay is top rated on Trip Advisor

Room Tip: Try to get room 5, which is has a great outside space on which to sit and watch the night sky.

“Charming Iskay”

We stayed several nights here after visiting Machu Picchu. The location is great--on one of the old cobblestone lanes overlooking the Ollantaytambo ruins. The hostal is quite charming and pretty. Our room was simple but comfortable. The owners are very friendly and accommodating. A good buffet breakfast is served at the adjacent restaurant. All in all it's a fine place to stay in this very interesting town.

“More than we could have hoped for.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Hostel Iskay was one of the best parts about our stay in the Sacred Valley. Our little suite was comfortable and clean. The view of the ruins from our window made it special. The location on the tiny cobblestone street was very quite and serene. The service was excellent! Lluc took care of our every need. Plenty of hot water in our private bath, the bed and bedding were wonderful.

Room Tip: The mini-suite was roomy and very private.

“My ideal hostal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Comfortable rooms, yummy breakfast, and hot water. These things alone would make this place a good find in the sacred valley. However, the attention to detail and level of service found here make it truly outstanding.
The first thing you see upon arrival is a large container of free mineral water, with a request for guests to refill bottles in order to help with trash levels in the rivers. Very progressive for Peru! You are then shown the hot tea and coca station, surrounded by fresh herbs from the garden. There is a kitchen for guest use, a dining/living area, a pretty garden and patio, and lots of useful information about the area. The rooms and common areas are spotless.
The Spanish expat owner Lluc was awesome. We were interested in self-guided trekking, and he happily gave us suggestions and useful information without trying to sell us a tour. He has maintained the homey feel of a family-run hostal while giving guests the space and service level of a hotel. When we returned to Ollanta after several days elsewhere, Lluc smiled at us and said "welcome home!". Indeed, that's what it felt like.

One possible consideration for high season travelers- apparently camping is allowed on the restaurant lawn directly below the hostal, and I could imagine potential noise problems at times. We did not experience this. Also, this review is from the perspective of a budget traveler. If you are expecting the Marriott, you may be disappointed. Go stay in Urubamba.
