“Great choice to start your Peru trip, close to long distance busses”

We booked a double room by email a few days prior to arriving in Lima. Our mail was promptly answered in very good English and when we arrived at Lima airport, our pickup service was waiting right after immigration, as the Hostel previously communicated. We decided to spend the $14 for airport pickup for safety reason, and considering that a taxi would cost around $12 it's well worth the extra money.

The staff at Hostal Malka is friendly and accommodating. When we checked in we were given a map of the area and she explained where the nearest bus stops and supermarkets are.

Rooms are small but comfortable. The mattresses are good quality but a bit on the short side if you are over 1.80m tall.
The kitchen is big and well equipped, the TV room is the most comfortable of the common areas, while the dining tables are a bit crammed and in a dark area.
There is wifi and 3 PC's for guest use (free)

Breakfast (inclusive) is big and tasty with 2 eggs freshly prepared to taste, even a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice is inclusive.

The rooms, showers, and common areas are spotless and don't have a moldy smell anymore, as one of the previous reviews highlighted.

The location in San Isidro (and hostel itself) is not a the location for you if you are into partying all night.
This is a rather quiet place with mostly couples staying overnight. But fairly central to explore the various areas of (historical center, Lince, Miraflores, Barranca) and it's very close to the major bus companies on Av Javier Prado. Cruz del Sur is a 5-10 minute taxi ride away.

We will stay at Malka again when we pass through Lima on our way north.

Room Tip: Room 10 is big and quiet, facing the backyard

“awesome start or end of Peru-Trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 April 2010

we finished our trip here in Malka Youth Hostel and we couldn`t have done any better! After 6 1/2 weeks in Peru we can really say that this was one of our best stays. Friendly and welcoming staff, clean big rooms, good beds, awesome big shower, a clean and big kitchen with all you need, a nice garden with hammocks, a table tennis and table soccer, and a climbing wall in the back, big living room with TV and a seperate one with 2 Computers (2 Soles per hour) and fast internet connection.
Close by are a fast food restaurant and two big supermarkets.
Would have loved to stay longer! Payed 70 soles the night for a room with private (awesome) bathroom.

“you can find something better”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2009

we booked it from Italy, 20$ for a private room, shared bathroom. Friendly staff but mould smell everywhere, due to the humidity of the city. Clean bath, but very small, and quite always busy. Linen of the bed already used by someone else, as we found hair on them. comfortable location if you need to go the the Ormeno bus station, as it is reacheable on foot.

“Horrid service in a de facto convent”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2009

If you like your hostel with a large dose of bad attitude (staff´s), incompetent staff, and prudish single-sex dorms, then this is the place for you. The workers lie to you, roll their eyes at you, make you wait 15 minutes so that they can write e-mails, refuse to get out of their chair to help you, order you around (!), refuse to tell you whether you left items (though they know), yell your full name several times in front of everyone in the hostel, et. al. Don´t forget that you will never meet a member of the opposite sex here; the dorms are sex segregated.
Males sleep only in male dorms and females sleep in only (eight person per room) female dorms; this is unlike almost all hostels in Peru. There are four bunk beds in each cramped dormitory. There is no heating (i.e. hot air) at night; Lima gets cold at night! Some of the customers are locals who live at this hostel for months at a time. The owners are no help, staring at you and using their horribly accented English. A worker named Melisa has the worst attitude.
