“Started out badly, but then turned around a bit.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

I reserved a double room through email and got a notification that our double bed room was reserved. When we arrived to Samay Wasi 1, it turned out that they didn´t have a double bed room for us because they had already given it to somebody else, strangely. We decided not to make a fuss and took a twin room. We asked the first night for a reservation for another two, which was no problem at all according to the guy at reception.
The next morning my girlfriend fell ill and we had to go the clinic, which the hostel arranged for us so they knew very well where we were and why. When we came back from the clinic a couple of hours later (still under the impression that we had the room for another two days) we were asked to check out... I got a bit irritated because that morning a had asked the reception if we could change rooms to a double bed room, which was no problem. The girl from reception took it very seriously though (mainly because she noticed my girlfriend was sick) and arranged that we could stay. So in the end it turned out quite alright, but also it was a very unnecessary hastle. It really didn´t seem like they knew what there were doing with their administration.
Also, our room (3) wasn´t very clean. I have mild dust allergy and immediately after entering the room I noticed my eyes tearing up and my nose started to run. The bed was okay but the pillow was absolutely terrible. I threw it out of the bed after 4 seconds and used a sweater for a pillow. The room was very cold at night due to inadequate isolation. Worst of all, it´s very, very noisy! You can literary hear everything the people in the room above you say and do.
The staff are very nice and friendly but most of them don´t speak very well English so there is always a language barrier. The breakfast is included, which makes for an overall good value for this hostel, but was plain (just breadrolls and marmelade). You can add extra options for breakfast which is nice but it´ll cost you some extra soles.
We left our baggage here during the Inca Trail, without problems. When we came back from the hike, we moved to Samay Wasi 2 (the star room) which was way better!
I wouldn´t easily recommend this hostel, due to our negative experience the first day.

“Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011

I have to start with a thankful word to Monica, how helpful and friendly she is. We came back to Samay Wasi again after our trip to Machu Pichu, and many other travelers did the same, so this explains how happy is everyone. I strongly recommend, the stairway is well worth the climb to get there. And the view is great too!

Room Tip: Top floor are good

“Nice staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2011

This best thing about this hostel is the staff. They are friendly and help organise tours for you as well as meeting you at the bus station or airport. The rooms were average and it is quite noisy. The breakfast was poor, a white roll with jam. Some fruit or something would have made it a bit better.

“Good hotel but a bit cold”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011

We stayed couple of nights at Samay Wasi I, and we enjoyed our stay.

Rooms are clean and shower is hot. Staff is friendly and helpful. They came at the bus station to pick us up for free.

They have a nice common area with a terrace, 2 computers and TV. You can also use the small kitchen for cooking.

Only drawback is that common area and rooms are a bit cold (day and night). A small fireplace in the common area would be perfect.

Location is a bit difficult as well, at the top of the hill, but you can take a taxi to go there. Anyway, it is good for acclimatation :-)

“Lovely friendly place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

I stayed in Samay Wasi I based on tripadvisor reviews and I wasn't disappointed. I stayed there before and after visiting Machu Picchu and my luggage was kept secure whilst away. I stayed in two different single rooms with private bathroom, and would recommend staying on the top floor, as you hear noise through the wooden floors during the night when guests go off on their various tours/treks. Monica is extremely helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Recommended.

Room Tip: Upstairs is better.
