“Does what it says on the tim”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

My brother in law who lives in Singapore booked us in here as it was good value by Singapore standards. We had a comfortably and quiet time for the four nights we stayed - nothing to give feedback about. It is a bit of a walk from the nearest MRT but the taxi pick up service outside is very efficient and you can walk to the central financial district along the river in 30 mins. It really is by the river and it is a pretty walk.

Room Tip: Higher up you great views, make sure you book a no smoking floor

“An air mattress and tent would have been a better option”

I was booked into this hotel as there was a conference on in Singapore and this was the only hotel available and its easy to see why. The location is inaccessible except by taxi and its not close to any shopping centres or train stations. admitedly it is a nice walk by the river to Clarke Quay and Boat Quay (major nightlift spots). The room itself was very basic, nothing flashy. the toilet was tiny and the television didn't work. sitting on the bed hurt my tailbone and sleeping on it was worse! I never knew they manufacture mattresses that hard! when I asked for an overlay to soften it somewhat, the overlay was harder than the mattress itself! the pillows on the other hand were lumpy and too soft. to make matters worse, there were little insects in the room. all in all a tired hotel that has not put in any effort to make their customers have a comfy stay!

Dear TaxiCat86,

Thank you for your comments regarding your stay with us.

We are glad that you enjoyed the walk along the Singapore River to Clarke Quay and Boat Quay. A number of guests chose to stay here because they also like the stroll along the river and visit Robertson Quay, which is just opposite the hotel for its trendy blend of dining and entertainment offerings, in addition to Clarke Quay and Boat Quay. Also, the hotel’s location can offer a welcome respite from the hustle of the busy downtown city area.

For shopping, there is the nearby Great World City, a 47,000 square metres one-stop all-day shopping mall with choices that include popular local and international brands, a 6-screen Cineplex and supermarket. It is on par with many downtown shopping centres and only around 10 minutes’ walk from the hotel.

We are pleased to share with you that a free shuttle bus service operates from the hotel to the popular Orchard Road shopping district and Chinatown on a regular basis every day. As Singapore is well known for its public transport system, a bus-train connection is a common mode of travel for many, locals and visitors alike. There is a bus-stop just outside the hotel with frequent public bus services to many popular places, such as Orchard Road, Chinatown, Clarke Quay, Bugis, Little India, as well as Raffles Place and Shenton Way in the Central Business District (CBD).

Some of these buses also go to the train stations along Orchard Road, all within 5 to 8 bus-stops away. The nearest train station is Clarke Quay MRT Station, which is only 4 bus-stops from the hotel and 2 bus services go there from the hotel.

Please accept our apologies about the faulty television and your experiences with the bed and pillows, which are being looked into. We have received different feedback for our beds, depending on guests’ personal preferences for a hard or soft bed. Some consider them soft while some consider the very same bed hard. Your views, including the mattress and overlay, will be shared with our housekeeping.

The size of our toilet is around 8 square meters, almost a third of the size of our room, which is at 23-25 square metres. This is above average for a 4-star hotel in Singapore. All our rooms are inspected by professional pest controllers on a monthly basis and they will respond to guest request on any insect related matter on the same day.

Many thanks for your valuable feedback and we hope to have the opportunity of welcoming you again one day when you are travelling to our part of the world.

“Beige”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

This hotel is located quite well, near Robinson and Clarke Quay, but it lacks some personallity.
The rooms are quite tired and even though I was on the 'executive' floor, the rooms were on the small side.
The decor is 'beige' and it just dont feel welcoming or homley.

As I was on a business trip I was hoping for a good network access, but being at the end of a corridor, the wireless that kept getting disconnected probably due to distantance to the access point and the load (there was a big conference going on).

There is nothing really wrong with this hotel, just nothing really right either.

Dear Anna N,

Thank you for your valuable feedback.

We are glad that you find the hotel is in a good location. Riverview Hotel is also near Chinatown and the popular shopping belt, Orchard Road. For the convenience of our guests, there is a daily free shuttle bus to these two places, as well as a free weekday (except Singapore Public Holidays) morning shuttle service to Outram MRT Station, Suntec City and Shenton Way at Lau Pa Sat.

We sincerely apologise for the Internet disconnections you experienced during your stay. Our current Internet service is provided by a third party and we are in the midst of installing our own network system with more access points. This is in line with the aim to provide our guests better Internet access at a lower cost.

As the hotel continuously strive to provide a comfortable stay for our guests, we are pleased to inform you that we will start laying new guestroom carpets from the second quarter of this year. In addition, our housekeeping team is looking at new ways to enhance the shampooing of the carpets on the floors in the meantime.

Once again, many thanks for your comments on your stay and we hope to see you again soon.

“It's 2012!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

I stayed in this hotel from for three nights from 22 January. The hotel possibly deserves a reasonably favourable review but it’s not going to get one from me. The location is fine - a frequent bus service runs from outside the hotel and it’s a pleasant walk along the river to the nearest MRT metro station.
Anyway, the room I was first given was a bit shabby and didn’t look anything like the rooms on the hotel’s website. When I complained I was shown to another more acceptable room with a view of the river. The wall-mounted flat-screen TV didn’t work properly and was changed by two men who took a while to install a new one which didn’t work well either. Not a big problem but annoying nonetheless.
The most ridiculous thing about this place and the reason I would never go back is the wifi service. All the employees of the hotel I spoke to about the service agreed with me and even asked me to approach the management about it because so many people had complained. For a so-called our-star hotel not to offer free wifi to its guests is scandalous, but if payment is needed I will grudgingly put my hand in my pocket. But what was the management thinking when they decided to sell wifi in ridiculous packages? The minimum is a five-hour package which costs more than 16 SGD (13 USD) but the five hours have to be used up uninterruptedly! Who logs on to the internet for 5 hours without a break while on holiday? There is a possibility of using the Business Centre internet service, but it isn’t open 24/7 and it costs 5 SGD for a measly 15 minutes. I have to say that Jennifer in the Business Centre is a credit to the hotel. In fact, all the hotel employees are very good, helpful and friendly, reflecting service and friendliness in Singapore as a whole.

Dear dominic-blaise,

Thank you for your comments regarding your stay with us.

We are delighted that you like the hotel location and enjoyed the walk along the Singapore River. It is very convenient for our guests to travel to popular places in Singapore, such as Orchard Road, Chinatown, Clarke Quay, Bugis, Raffles Place, Shenton Way and Little India by using the bus services from the bus-stop just outside the hotel.

We are sorry that the first room you were assigned was not to your liking and are glad you are fine with the second room, which has the Singapore River view. Please accept our apologies about the faulty TV and, as you have graciously noted, we have immediately attended to the matter.

We have also taken note of your comments about the hotel Internet access but unfortunately, our Internet system is currently provided by an external contractor. We are now in the process of installing our own system which will replace the third party provider by the beginning of March or April. This new system will increase the operating speed of the in-house Wi-Fi drastically while reducing the charges significantly. Until then, to recover his investment, the charges are actually levied by the contractor.

We greatly appreciate your compliments on our team members and their services. Your positive feedback is a big motivation to our staff and we will definitely convey this to Jennifer and the team.

Many thanks once again for your valuable feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit to Singapore.

“A bit out of the way”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

This is a lovely hotel but a bit out of the way to walk to orchard road or other amenities. The views are amazing but the pool is freezing!! Good value tho as much cheaper than other Singapore hotels.

Dear littlecoldkiwi,

Thank you for your compliments. We are glad that you like the views from the hotel.

Regarding Orchard Road, for our guests’ convenience, we are pleased to share with you that there is a daily free shuttle bus service between 10.03 am and 8.03 pm from the hotel to this popular shopping belt and Chinatown (near Clarke Quay).

With the efficient and affordable Singapore public transport system, there is also bus service number 123 from the bus-stop just outside the hotel to the Orchard Road area, including two MRT (train) stations – Somerset and Orchard. The journey is around 10 minutes and between 5 and 8 bus-stops away, depending on which stop along along Somerset Road and Orchard Boulevard, which are just behind Orchard Road, you wish to alight at.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Riverview Hotel and many thanks for sharing your experience.
