Stayed 6 days at a Premier Room. Checked in at the club lounge, and was offered a room upgrade to newly renovated shophouse room at level 2 (same floor as the lounge). Viewed both rooms before deciding to decline the offer, as the room which I booked, although not renovated, was a 50+ sq m junior suite, on high floor in main wing, while the shophouse room was a mere 30+ sq m! How could this be an upgrade beats me.
Roomwise, I was happy with the space, as there is a dining table and a sofa lounge. The view overlooked Parkview Square from afar, and the air-conditioned Bugis Junction Mall from below. No unpleasant odours from the somewhat tired looking carpets, and the shower and bath produced sufficient jets of water. There was nightly turn-down service, with bottled water placed at the bedside and slippers at the foot of the bed. It would be great if the hotel could place a piece of chocolate or a bookmark too (as in some other hotels like the Conrad). But nevertheless, the daily cleaning and turn-down service were consistent, except pen and note papers were not replenished after the 2nd day. I have misplaced them and was scrambling to find a pen to jot down some telephone numbers of restaurants.
The staff at club lounge were very friendly and helpful. No amount of request was too much for them. On the 1st day, I merely said I like the pineapple tarts and almond cookies which I have sampled during teatime, and would like to purchase them if possible. When I next visited the lounge, the receptionist had already packed 2 jars of the tarts and cookies in a presentation box with the receipt from the Chinese restaurant - how's that for efficiency and thoughtfulness! Breakfast in my opinion is better at the club lounge than the Olive Tree Restaurant downstairs, even though the latter has variety. At the club lounge, Mr Amin the chef prepared eggs in whatever way we need, and is always cheerful and chatty, unlike the buffet breakfast downstairs. The bacon at the club is better and crispier than the ones downstairs too.
Overall, this is an above average and decent hotel, with staff greeting you at the corridors and holding the lift for you. The concierge was also very helpful and thoughtful. There was a long queue of people waiting for taxis in the afternoon, and I had wanted to go to the airport. The concierge tried booking a taxi to no avail. When a taxi pulled in at the driveway for a passenger to alight, the concierge kindly allowed me to take the taxi first, beating the long line of queue. I was initially embarrassed but very thankful that because of this gesture I would not be missing the flight.
Room Tip: Take a club floor room as the club benefits far outweigh the costs. If you are a light sleeper, don...
