My family and I (husband and 7 year old daughter) stayed at Monaco for our Christmas holiday. I purposely picked a resort that was off the beaten path because I had heard from friends who had travelled to Boracay previously that the White Beach area can be very noisy at night a bit difficult to sleep if you happen to be next a location with lots of loud music and party-goers.
Monaco did not disappoint in this way, it was a lovely, well-kept, quiet resort. As prior reviewers have mentioned the shuttle service is excellent and necessary considering that it is a good 10 minute drive to D'Mall, especially in the evenings when traffic is particularly congested. We did not feel that we missed any of the ambiance of White Beach by staying at this location.
We had a one bedroom suite with an extra bed for my daughter, the housekeeping staff did a great job of keeping up the room, which when we arrived was clean, fresh and really big. We had a great view of the ocean from the huge balcony and never tired of watching the kite surfers in the bay outside. The pool was wonderful, very clean, though it could have been a bit warmer for my tastes. The jacuzzi was broken when we first arrived, but we mentioned it and it was fixed immediately. The hotel has 3 kayaks for your use as well as a jet-boat for rental. You can jet boat off of White Beach, but this is a nice amenity if you are hanging at the resort for the day and want to do some water activities without trekking to the beach. The price for rental is comparable to what you'd pay over at White Beach. We used the kayaks and paddled in the bay one afternoon as the tide was just coming in, the water is so clear and pretty tranquil when the wind dies down that you can really enjoy all of the fantastic sea life below.
The hotel has space reserved at Station 3 in front of Coco Loco restaurant for hotel guests. There is a shuttle that will take you there and it is about a 4 minute ride down the hill. We found this end of the beach to be wonderful and we ended up walking the entire of White Beach several times and really like the more quiet atmosphere of our location. Plus, if you're into snorkeling, about 500 meters down the beach is a great reef that you can walk to from Station 3 and see all kinds of great sea creatures. Sunday, who is the staff person from Monaco at the beach is wonderful, attentive and kind.
The best thing about Monaco above all else is the staff. They are so accommodating and very helpful. Whatever we needed or asked for they were there to help us out. Every morning when we came to breakfast, we received the warmest hellos and good mornings that felt very sincere. The chef took a liking to my daughter and several days prepared her special pancakes and on her last day presented her with chocolates to take home.
My only negative with this resort is the food. We ate breakfast here every morning and had one dinner on our last night because we were just too tired to go down to D'Mall. The food was passable, but not fantastic. There was a huge variety for every taste and included all of the standard Filipino and Western fare, but some days the cooked things just missed the mark. But truthfully, we found that throughout Boracay, this is not a "foodies" paradise.
Also, we used the hotel transport to get us over to Caticlan. It was a bit more pricey then if we had used trikes and the public ferry, but they walked us right through the process and we had our own speed boat to get us across the water. From the time we left the resort until we arrived at the Caticlan airport it was 15 minutes. The staff handled all of our bags for us and made sure they didn't leave until we were through the airport security and on our way. I would recommend if you want the personal touch, then spend the php 1500/person round trip and have the hotel handle your airport transport.
If we were to return to Boracay, we would certainly stay at Monaco again.
Room Tip: If you don't want to walk a lot, because there are lots of stairs here as the resort is built in...
