“Family Retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

We booked a family villa at Buri Resort for 4 nights and availed of their private van pickup and boat transfer (both highly recommended) each costing PHP7,000 return. Left Makati at 8AM and arrived at the resort at 11:15AM. Land transfer was okay but our boat ride was a different story. After sailing smoothly for 15 minutes the ride became a bit rough and lasted until we reached the resort.

At the Buri wharf, we were met by Jerome with the complimentary arrival drinks and a smiling Kathy Nantes. The rough ride was forgotten almost immediately especially when we were taken to our villa. It is true to the pictures that we saw on the internet, actually the entire resort is! What you see is what you get.

During our stay we ordered most of our meals from the resort and all we can say is compliments to the cook! Manang Josie’s dishes were always a delight. We have to confess though that after browsing through the menu on our first day that we weren’t too impressed by what we thought was a very limited selection. But the Grilled Pork Chop, Spaghetti Bolognese, Grilled Squid and Cream of Mushroom soup we had for our first lunch there changed our minds. We started to look forward to every meal so we can try another dish.

My kids loved the Spaghetti Bolognese (my daughter had it for lunch and dinner on the same day!), my son was a big fan of the Cream of Mushroom soup he had it 3 times! We also tried their Sinigang na Hipon, Chicken Adobo, Grilled Chicken, Basil Chilli Chicken, Beef Salpicao, Fried Fish Fillet with Tamarind Sauce, Tofu Furai Don, Pancit Bihon and they were all excellent. There were only 4 dessert selections and we tried 3 of them, Filipino Banana Split, Mango Crepe and Brownie Ala Mode. A fitting ending to a very good meal.

One should not be deceived by the simplicity of the menu, the dishes listed may sound like your normal average food fare but the taste takes it to another level which makes dining at Buri Resort an experience in itself.

They can also accommodate requests to cook dishes that are not listed in the menu as long as ample time is given.

TIP: Pre-order your meal to save on waiting time.

My husband and I tried their spa, he had the Buri Ginger Revival Massage(PHP1500) and I had the Coconut Body Glow (PHP2500). Thanks to Mila and Elvie, our therapists for a very relaxing experience. The spa is located right behind our family villa so it was very convenient. It used to be located at the top of the hill according to the staff but they had to move it very close to the bottom of the steps to make it easily accessible. I needed to have a shower after my scrub but the location of the shower room and toilet is a bit awkward as it’s outside the spa room. It doesn’t have a door as well so I had to think of a way to wash off and still have a bit of privacy. It turned out that this is the existing layout of a garden villa which they just converted.

They have complimentary USB’s for broadband internet connection but guests have to ask for it as they don’t give it automatically upon check-in.

Tipping doesn’t seem to be mandatory and there’s no line to write down the amount for tipping purposes on the bill when you settle your account. So what we did was on our last day we left a modest amount to be divided amongst the staff (one key asset of the resort) that made our visit a pleasant one.

Our boat ride back to Batangas was relaxing, thanks to the calm waters and the cool breeze, what a way to end our wonderful visit to Puerto Galera.

“A Gem of Tranquility”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

Stayed for a week with family -- fabulous time! Private boat transfers from Batangas to Buri went very smoothly, local boat (banca) was quite big with very efficient and friendly crew. The 2-level family villa was just the right size for 2 adults and 2 children. Ground Floor has master bedroom that opens to outdoor patio, good size toilet/shower/2 closets (but needed hooks for towels), small refrigerator and small safebox. Top floor has 2beds (1 with extra pull-away bed underneath to technically 3 beds total),flat screen TV (good reception and programmes incl Bloomberg, CNBC, BBC, CNN), closets - great room for kids.

F&B service was a bit slow at first but one has to remember the laid back culture in this country, especially when you are in the islands. Sorted this out by "pre-ordering" dinners/lunches, or leisurely hiked (or take banca for 400 pesos roundtrip) to wet market at PG town for live prawns, green crabs, fish that Buri chef deliciously cooked! Menu is mostly western food, but again Chef is open to suggestions and one could simply request for a preferred local/Filipino dish.

Buri's charm lies in its location - away from crowd and noisy bars, but accessible enough by walking to other coves (Sabang, Lalaguna, Muelle Pier) or by renting bancas to visit deserted beaches or for snorkeling, fishing, scuba diving. Staff or boatmen who wait by the kiosk at resort jetty would say there's no other access to Buri except taking the boat. Not true. One can walk by following the path along the beach (at Buri front gate, turn left), walk through the fishing village next to the resort, boat builders, and until you reach the main road. Locals are very friendly and will gladly offer directions to any of the more populated coves, ie. Sabang, Small Lalaguna, Big Lalaguna and PG town/pier.

Also advisable to get the "official" banca rental rates at Muelle Pier to make sure you are getting a good deal. If you foresee renting a banca for several days, make a deal directly with the boatman for a lower price. This is simply fantastic since you can then have picnics at deserted beaches. Buri can provide a cooler for drinks, water, and if you bring fish from market, your boatman would happily grill them alfresco while you and family are enjoying a swim or are snorkeling!

Buri is for those who prefer the solitude of reading a good book by the pool, or listening to "Tu-ko's" of the island's big lizards and the chirping of birds, or taking the 400+ steps to the top villa as daily exercise routine. For those digital natives, you can ask for a WIFI plug-in so you can still keep in touch with friends while sipping a glass of wine or a cold bottle of San Miguel.

Finally, electricity brown-outs are often, but Buri has its own generator, and it is also advisable to bring your own torches (flash lights).

Room Tip: The extra fee for the "plunge pool" at other villas is not worth it. the plunge pool was...

“EXACTLY what we were looking for!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2011

My husband and I were in Manila from the US on business, and wanted a weekend getaway. We're very much the small boutique types and not so much the 50, 100 + room metropolis of hotels. We were referred to Buri by colleagues who stayed here last year, and we were VERY grateful for the perfect recommendation.

We loved the remote location, the staff was very attentive from the moment we booked, we didn't want for anything our entire stay (unfortunately just 2 nights). The food was incredible as well was the helpfulness of learning about the area and things to do/see. We had a couples massage, I've noticed some complaining about the 'spa' location up many many stairs ... yes, exercise is required to get there and this wouldn't be feasible for anyone with physical limitations. But the view is so well worth it, and is just a part of what this slice of paradise is all about! The massages didn't make it to the top of our list but wonderful nonetheless. We hired a boat (owner lives on the property just down the way from Buri) for a sunset cruise & to see more of the area, then were dropped off for dinner, then picked up again later. This was a fun adventure which we'd recommend. Buri's prices seemed well below what we'd expect to pay for such a location and quality in many other places in the world including North America (US, Mexico). Coming from Manila I can see how some might feel it's a bit pricey. It's all relative, but we felt like the value far outweighed the price...Buri is VERY worth it, and we hope to make it back as soon as we can! HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Buri!!!

“Nice beautiful hotel, but overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 March 2011

I spend few nights at this hotel and I have to say this is a beautiful place, well maintained, with it's own charm. The hotel is build on the hill, so it's very steepy. The beach is not so nice, but they have a private pier where you can get a boat to go snorkelling nearby in coral gardens. The Restaurant is ideally located, near the pier and beach, to provide fresh breeze during the evenings. Their food and beverage stock is somewhere limited, but considering the hotel was almost empty during our stay, it's understandable, and the staff always made their best to accomodate.
But all this come at a price, and everything is at least double or triple the price of what you can find anywhere else in Puerto Galera. For example, any organised boat trip will cost double the price of what you can negociate on others hotels nearby, same for drinks, food etc ... and the fact that you can only reach the hotel by the sea, mean you can not easily go out for dinner and you are almost obliged to eat at the hotel restaurant.
In overall, if you have lot of money to spend and want to be sure about a quality stay, then you can choose this hotel. But there is lot of others less expensive hotels that also provided very nice services.
ps: The hotel also offer a private boat transfer and also a private car transfer from Manila Airport. This is also totally overpriced (double the price of others hotels), but we choose it anyway and on our way back, we had to face a poor driver that want to stop in a street restaurant for eating his dinner (while we were hoping to reach our Manila hotel before 9h00pm). We had to badly argue with him to explain that with the overprice paid, we want to be driven direct to Manila and he finally accept, but this ruin the end of our stay by stressing us

AbFAB! This boutique hotel is gorgeous. I will post pics and you can see for yourself! My visit was in 2009, but the site will not let me back date. The hotel is own/run by a fantastic lady who puts customer service first.
