My wife and I stayed in Hong Kong for four nights for pleasure in January. The weather was pretty dreary the whole time, but our experience staying at the Island Shangri La was not. We found the hotel to be first rate, and in a great neighborhood close to everything.
Our room was on the 51st floor, and was one of their standard rooms that is available between the 38th and 51st floor. We had a peak side room, and I would not pick the other side for any reason. The view of the peak is unique and awe-inspiring. The harbor side is likely to have lots of buildings and some water to look at. The peak side has Victoria Peak and buildings with Hong Kong Park down below. I imagine it's the quieter side too. It's certainly the pretty side.
Our room had an adjoining door, which isn't optimal. Sadly, the neighboor next door smoked one night and the smell came through to our room, despite the floor being non-smoking. My wife reported it and the guest was moved. We also had two twin beds next to each other. If you prefer, ask for a King. The room is beautifully appointed if a bit dated in its look, with a nice chandelier hanging in the center. The TV and internet worked great, and I appreciated that the internet was included at no extra charge. Fresh fruit is left in the room in a small basket each day, and this was a nice touch.
The Shangri La is attached to a luxury shopping mall area, and you don't really need to go outside to get to the Metro. This is a plus in case it's raining outside. The location at Admiralty Place is really walking distance to everything you'll want to see on Hong Kong Island, but the great subway system is cheap, efficient, and easily accessible.
In sum, this is THE gem of Hong Kong in terms of elegance, setting, location, and service. The price for pleasure travelers may be prohibitive, however. We found a GREAT rate at nearly half off the rate found elsewhere on the internet. Paid USD $330 per night for a room that normally can't be had for under $500. It's worth a little online shopping if you want to stay here. We did and saved some major money while moving to this hotel from the boutique hotel we originally had booked at a similar price.
If we ever return to Hong Kong, the Shangri La on Hong Kong Island will be our first choice.
Room Tip: Get the peak view side. See our pictures, you won't be disappointed.
