I stayed for 4 nights just before the Lunar New Year. The hotel is located in older Beijing and has a great atmosphere. The rooms were extremely clean, and very well appointed. The access to the hotel is a narrow alley-way (like a Hutang) and the hotel has a modest entryway. The hotel is set up where all the rooms open up to a two story courtyard. The staff spoke very clear English and were extremely helpful with laundry, restaurant recommendations, directions, etc. The beds were very comfortable, flat screen TVs, in room computers and wireless, tea service, great free hot breakfast (lots of selections)...all around GREAT value. I will definitely be coming back to this hotel when I return to Beijing!

As mentioned in all the other posts, the hotel itself is lovely, the rooms are unique and comfortable and the staff very friendly. Even with all these qualities, I am still hesitant to recommend to other travelers.

My flight arrived very late on Friday night, well past midnight, and I could tell at the airport that the taxi driver had no idea where the hotel was, even though I should him the chinese map provided on the website. He pulled over and called the hotel for over 20 minutes and it was still difficult to find. Once I knew where it was during daylight, I was able to navigate other taxi drivers with sign language to avoid the same confusion.

I was in Beijiing for less than 48 hours and felt like I was spending quite a bit of time traveling between different sites and the hotel, it's either a 20-30 minute walk to the closets location or the same time on the subway.

I did enjoy walking around a different neighborhood I would not have seen otherwise, but I think if you are in town for just a few nights, it is probably better to stay someplace a bit more central.

There was a lovely courtyard (as in the name) and my room had a private deck, both of which would probably be great in the summer. If you have a week to stay in Beijing, then this place is great, but otherwise, I would suggest someplace else.

We visited Double Happiness at the beginning and end of our Beijing visit. This is a lovely place and makes a complete change from standard Western style hotels. As noted in the reviews, staff were extremely friendly and helpful and really made us feel at home. They also helped us make some bookings and gave us advice. It looked like there were some interesting excursions as well on their noticeboards (tours around town, visits to The Great Wall, etc). Usually I prefer making my own way around, but with the scale of Beijing, I would consider arranged trips such as these. On the back of this comment, looking at the map, I thought Hutong would be fairly short – maybe 400/600 metres. The road is actually way longer, so it is some walk to the main roads. However, it is certainly worth the walk. I would recommend using Dongsi subway station to get to the hotel – there are other that looked close on the map, but they were some walk away. If you need any supplies, there is a nice supermarket on the corner by McDonalds. In terms of location though, from Dongsi, it’s easy to get to all the major places. It’s also possible to walk up to Beihai Park, or walk back from the North gate of the forbidden city.

The rooms we stayed in were lovely, and all were unique with interesting twists. I would say the best room we saw was 188. My parents in law stayed a few nights as well, so we got to see 3 different rooms, all of which we were happy with. We really enjoyed the breakfasts with the interesting Chinese selections included. There was certainly plenty to choose from there. As mentioned, there are some restaurants at the end of the Hutong. Whilst these looked nice and local/authentic, we found the food to be a little bland and prices were very high for Beijing.

I hope my comments here aren’t sounding too negative. Double Happiness is an absolute gem, the rooms are lovely, and it really gave a feeling of being somewhere completely different, but with plenty of comfort. I would highly recommend Double Happiness!

Traditional chinese house with nice decoration, nice location, we liked it.
One complain still, is that we booked family room through their website, but we got the smaller room (we are 4), we saw other family rooms were much bigger than ours, also they forgot to keep the baby cot as requested so we had no baby cot for the first night. bad luck.
Friendy staff anyway.
