I am conflicted in writing this review. Having stayed all over the world at some very nice hotels, I know that this is not one of them. However, after more than 20 trips to China, I have stayed at many local Chinese hotels, and this is pretty good by those standards.
Like others, I came for a conference, and stayed in the 16th District. This hotel is a good hour drive from town - you don't want to go here unless the hotel is your destination. Don't make this your base for Beijing sightseeing. Get information in writing to give to your taxi driver. Even with my typed directions, the driver still had no idea where to go, and tried to drop us off at the main building. Make sure you know which building you're staying in before the driver lets you off, 'cause it's a long walk.
Everything here is very big and cheesy. Some of the decor appears that it was intended to copy western style, but not quite. There is a lot of red when you check in. There were about 17 or 18 check in stations, but only 4 or 5 were in use. As others have said, hotel looks to be relatively empty by the number of people staying there. Staff does not speak much English, but you can generally communicate well enough.
Room was small, bed was extremely hard (picture a pillow topped slab of concrete), but that is typical for Chinese beds. There is a balcony, but it was smoggy outside, and nothing to look at. TV has minimal English channels, but there are some free movies you can watch on demand. The internet uses the TV for a screen, but you can unplug the ethernet connection and use your own laptop if you want.
The room was generally well worn. The lamp shades were dirty and broken, and the walls were not as clean as they could be.
Bathroom was also typical for Chinese standards. Everything worked, but no need to linger. The sink was very nice, tho - one of the high points of the room.
The conference facilities were well worn. There was a musty smell in several of the rooms, as if they had not been used in a while. The podiums were worn and did not match, and the electronics were old and required a lot of wires across the floor. The hallways tended to be stifling hot - there was no A/C. On a couple of days there were fans in the hallway trying to keep the air circulating and the temperature bearable. The carpets needed to be stretched - as a result, the carpet would bunch up and create a tripping hazard.
The restaurants were fine by local Chinese standards. Chinese food was much better than Western food. The language barrier caused a little problem ordering in the Western restaurant - a salami only pizza was delivered with everything except salami. The next time we ordered it was went over each topping and said yes or no for each one.
The grounds are very interesting. Apparently this is (or was) a resort for locals. There are thousands of hotel rooms, the monorail, the roller coaster (track, at least), the hot springs, pools, and even plastic surgery!
No one should mistake this hotel as a place to stay when visiting Beijing. However, if you are visiting something in the area (not sure what is there), or you are going to a conference at the hotel, then you'll certainly survive just fine.
